Sharp GF-9000 cassette deck mechanism – Repair or Buy

Hello friends,

I recently purchased this beautiful unit. I sent it to a technician for inspection since only the radio was working. They fixed the Line-In and the faulty bass/treble knobs for me. They also disassembled the cassette mechanism, but told me it is completely jammed and that it would be best to order a working one.

How can I repair this or order a replacement mechanism at a reasonable price? I would be totally fine with buying one taken from a working parts unit (donor machine) and having it shipped to me.

Thanks for the help!

You cannot buy replacement mechanisms for *any* 80s boombox, that technician misinformed you. They should've known better than to say that.

Repairing a mechanism takes time and patience; you learn as you go. Very few boomboxes share the same mechanism, so it will be difficult to find replacement parts, unless you're lucky enough to find someone with the same one that's willing to scrap it.

i was told the same with a 1980 hitachi boom box by a shop owner when i saw the box tucked on his shelf..i said thats ok how much do u want for it. because i knew what was wrong with it..and i was right. the motor had shorted and blew the main fuse ..your deck is easy to repair if u know what your doing

ive just striped down a sharp gf 6060 for spares and it has the same motor as yours...the two things that get jammed on those mechanical logic control decks is either the solenoid..or the main cog that lifts the heads up into play mode..if the heads are stuck in the play position.. turn the flywheel in the right direction of tape travel while holding the stop button and the heads will drop down resetting the deck..if the motor is working ok then put on a new belt and your good to go..thats why the heads get jammed because of a slack belt. that lifts the heads into play mode

I should emphasize that I am not a technician myself. In fact, local technicians around here are not enthusiastic about working on this at all. They basically told me to just look for a donor/spare unit for parts—which, as you can imagine, I haven’t been able to find anywhere.
Since I’ll be tackling this on my own as a beginner: do I need to completely remove and extract the whole mechanism from the chassis to do this? Or is there enough room to manually turn the flywheel and replace the belt just by taking off the back cover of the boombox?
Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it!"
