Here is my newest box, a GF-8989 II. I'm really enjoying it's build quality, this thing is a tank! Its feels very solid for a mid size, has decent sound and this thing screams. I'm gonna put it up against my Panasonic 5050 to see which one is louder.
This unit works flawlessly, the case had a lot of paint splatter on the back, handle and some on the front, but it all came off. :-)
Some things i need are an original antenna, power cord and one of the speakers has some stains on it so I'll have to clean them off.
Enjoy!

These tweeters look pretty weak. But for some reason, the sound pretty good.

I used a mild solution of bleach to get the bad stains off. At first I used too strong a solution and you can see the two really white spots i i hit first.

I couldn't get all of the grime off, for fear that the bleach would compromise the cones integrity. It's alot better than before, you cant notice them behind the grills.

With that said I butted her up and declared "mission accomplished!!!" I celebrated with a Chimay, a Belgian Trappist beer that totally kicks ass! . I highly recommend one if you enjoy craft beers.

Very nice, Paul!! I especially like the hypnotic spinners inside too. Frank's son was wanting to trade his 8989 II while at the 2009 Sunshine Mix. I wish I had had something to trade because the 8989 II is a beautiful box!

Nice box and good choice. The 8989 was one of the first boxes I actively sought out in its various forms, back when I started intentionally collecting. In design, sound, and features, it does not disappoint!

Hi-I have one of these and bought one brand new in 1981'.
This is probably my favorite boombox-sentimental reasons!
They sound just wonderful & they are very loud!
Great catch,I'm looking for a mint one-preferably with sticker!
Nice!
Have a super week-GB. :-)

Though i haven't actually heard an 8989,I still can say it would have to sound better than a 5050.The 5050 has a nice bright sound but details get lost in the mids. I will say that I'm pretty confident the 5050 would be actually louder, though. In fact I wonder if there's any comparable box in size that could beat that Pana for sheer volume! It will be interesting to see if you agree with me on this.
