So I was able to snag one of these that the seller stated was working. I am sure the cassette isn't. We'll see. I paid less than 80 dollars shipped. Others on eBay are asking over 300 plus for ones that have issues.

These little boxes are pricy. I guess if I can't get it going 100%, I think I still got a decent deal as it is all there. Just needs a cleaning and one tip of one antenna is missing. Heck, even if all I get to do is look at it, it's worth it to me just to have one that's complete. I have been wanting one of these for a while now.

Hopefully it arrives in a week or two.

I've always liked the look of the blue ones (when everything is silver, pretty soon, it becomes uninteresting). But I do believe this is the Japanese version of the M-7850/M7900 and if a western variant were available, I'd prefer those simply to avoid the Japan-only challenges. However, they are very good looking and sounding units for such a small boombox. Has a high quality feel about them unlike many boomboxes of this size. In fact, sanyo made many awesome minis.

I am really starting to get excited. I have been looking at the mechanics of the deck in videos. Looks like they use idlers for FF/Rew. Hopefully those aren't too far gone but I am sure I can come up with a workaround if so. My biggest concern is making sure the radio and amp section work. If so, I can usually get a cassette deck singing. I have lots of larger boomboxes so now I am starting to want smaller but feature packed boomboxes.

A long as this thing does more than make buzzing noises when I turn it on, I feel confident I can get it working again. They sure do have a lot of electrolytics inside. Circuit issues are my biggest concern. I doubt it receives in stereo but I am sure they have a pilot adjustment screw that will bring stereo in. I have had good luck with that on other radios. But I may be getting ahead of myself here. It might not do anything but crackle when the volume is adjusted. I am unfamiliar with the common faults these have but I am sure this one has it for the low price. Unless I get lucky

I don't have the Sanyo MR-V8 in my collection.
Have seen lots fixing the deck with ease. Not complicated like M9998.

I have 3 of its big brother Sanyo M9998. Not all of them are fully working.
FM and Line in work on all and the sound is excellent and very unique.

Don't want to say anything on the bad part.

I figured there must be something special about them. Maybe they have gold components inside because everyone on eBay is asking $$$.$$ for those things for some reason. This one was so cheap it has me really wondering what I might be getting myself into. If this one does more than just make farting or motorboat noises when I turn it on, maybe I'll get to experience what it is all about. At this price, I would be happy if the radio and speakers work.

Farting and motorboating is common, especially on units that originate from Japan due the the highly corrosive island environmental conditions. A general and heavy deoxit treatment usually resolves that but those could also be caused by degraded caps. All issues that should be within your skill set to resolve.

Feeling good. Appears she just needs a cleaning and mechanical work on the deck.

I don't have time for it now but look for this little dude to be playing cassettes next year

Radio works in stereo. All controls work but are very dirty. Needs deoxit cleaning. OG antennas but missing tips. Probably get aftermarket ones. Motor on cassette deck runs when buttons are pressed #belts.

But the most concerning part is over. Amp and speakers are good. Tuner works. YES!!

. I am looking forward to it. I plan to tear it all the way down and give it a good wash, deoxit clean and then tackle the deck. I only need to find the correct belt sizes. I know we have a belt section on here but I don't think it specifically mentions the V8 model. My understanding is that the M9990 models shar the same componenets mechanically so I might just go by those belt sizes.

I should be able to get this going as long as the pots aren't too far gone. They're pretty crusty in their operations.
