AC or DC? AC should not matter DC will only work one way. There maybe an AC interlock in the orifice these can fail.

I just got a black Sanyo M7770K and I couldn't tell by looking whether it had a positive or negative center pin on the power connector
so I used a multimeter continuity tester and discovered the center pin is positive on my M7770K.
