I guys, I'm new here.

I've had this boombox for a long time, it's kind of just a novelty and fun photo prop, but I like it and I use it sometimes. I found a willie nelson tape recently, put it in, and the gear didn't turn. Lights come on, the thing is engaged, but the gear doesn't turn. Hoping it just had a broken belt I opened it up, and it turns out the motor just doesn't turn. Looks like someone did a kind of sloppy repair on it back in the day.

Local vintage audio repair shop didn't even give me 90 seconds, he just said he wouldn't fix it.

So, I'm a fairly capable DIY guy; I've rebuilt vintage motorcycle engines, and houses. Electronic is not really where my DIY skill thrive, but I'm not a total dummy and I can follow directions. I have a soldering iron, even have access to a de-soldering thingy.

What do you guys think? Anyone got any tips on where to start?

Oh man, thanks for that goodman! I looked over that wiring diagram for a few min, and I couldn't locate the tape drive motor on it. I really only understand about 20% of that diagram though.

Here are the photos you asked for.

I'm wondering if there is a safe way to test if the motor is actually working or not?

from the photos it seems that the motor is connected correctly.
if you have a multimeter you will be able to check the cables.
the black cable is minus / ground (check this black isolation - where is arrow on second pic)
red cable is a plus (12 volts)
the orange 1 is between the motor and the S741 switch;
the orange 2 is from the key, back to the board;
the S741 switch may be dirty and need to be cleaned.
when pressing PLAY the key S741 must be closed and apply voltage to the motor,
VU meter must work and you can hear little noise from speakers.

If VU meter work, but motor not - problem must be in motor.
You can check motor, but Sanyo must be turned Off.
Use 9v battery with cables to give power to motor.

Sorry for disappearing, my multimeter wasn't where it was supposed to be and I was too stubborn to just buy a new one, so I hunted it down for 2 weeks.

I did the test. The second pic isn't showing for me anymore for some reason, i remember it showed up two weeks ago; but I think I understood the directions anyway and it seems to be the motor is bad. The switch has continuity, and the motor, the machine seems to engague when play is pushed, and the motor doesn't respond to the 9v battery

So, the next question. What motor do I buy? Is this a CW or CCW motor?

P.S. Thank you so much for taking the time to write out helpful responses to me.
