This is something I really just stumbled upo this very moment.
I just did a soundcheck with my new BigBen and I have to say I am more than impressed with it. I first tried the tape which plays a little too fast at the moment and was only a little disappointed by the sound. Then when I switched to radio, all my doubts were blown away. Holy Crap! That thing can kick some butt! :-O
But what really sold me was the line in. I picked some nice electro to see how much the woofer can do and how high the tweeters would go.
DAMN! The auto loudness on the volume dial is position excellently! Just when it tries to distort, the loudness goes off and you can crank it up to full without any problems!
All that while the Super woofer and bass are almost at 100%. When I took off the cover to see what the woofer was doing I almost shat myself  . It was bouncing around like crazy! :w00t:
Still, it sounded really good. The passive sound of that woofer chamber is amazing!
So, this got me wondering and I did a personal ranking of my top three best sounding boxes:
3. Toshi S90
2. BigBen
1. M90
This yet again got me wondering if it is even fair to compare the BigBen to the mighty M90. After all it uses a completely different system to generate bass. Everyone who has ever heard an Aiwa 880 with its amazing passive radiator knows that it also can kick an M90's butt easily. Still, it is abvious those two are not comparable by any matter.
I for my part came to the point that I will give the BigBen its own category. After all it is the only portable one piecer with the attempt of a real subwoofer and subwoofers are just out of range for normal woofers.
However, this seemed interesting enough for me to make a topic for it.
BigBen owners - what's your view on this?

Haha you asked just big ben owners , but i wll tell my experience with passive radiators. Back in the 80's was hard to get good massive PA speakers they were extremly expensive ) so me and my other djing friends went for good home speakers with passive radiators which always produce lot lower bass than similar size of normal bass drivers speakers. Actually all those hype about which boomer is better on sound is really subjective. Everybody looks at the boomer an trying to judge the sound. Thats simply 100% wrong. All sound comparos are made when judging person dont seen the sound emitting unit. Than all this hype about M90 and so will be easy ruined without any doubt. Its so easy and totally subjective and wrong when you seeing the units. People have some expectation this way and judging wrong. Im sure that a regular one piecer without any special construction to kill the turbulence dont have any chance against specially constructed boomer with passive radiator in meaning of real low bass. The rumor is that passive radiator is equal on the double the size of the normal bass driver. So who wants can count :-D . Other thing - the bass is not for hearing, is more for "feeling" so all this sound comparos and which is 1st which second are pointless and wrong.
Make a simple test - hide the boomers behind a curtain. than somebody else to play em in random order. And we can talk after :-D .
All this is not for you Max. Its for everybody ( im sure lot of members will read this tread  ) . Thats my one cent on all those comparos :-D .
And now on the real things - congrats on this beauty. For me personally Big ben is outstanding beaty. Lot more interesting from conventional one piecers and is one of the ever best boomers first on technology , than on design and so on.
Im really happy for you  .
The shape of the chamber and the red accent on the radiator just kills everything else on look

The BigBen is a glorious machine.

It may be unfair to compare to other boomboxes.. but everyone will anyway; however no one really understands how lovely they do sound until they hear one.

I believe that all the 'big three' are wonderful boomboxes and to be very honest I don't believe there's much separating them and I for one would never choose between them as to which is the 'best'. They're all the best!

Thanks for your opinion, Rick!
The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that the BigBen is its own class. No other company every tried to build a subwoofer into a boombox back then!
It is a sweet sounding machine but comparing it to usual 2-way speaker systems on other boomboxes is just not right.

I also absolutely agree about the ranking. All three boxes i mentioned are a class of their own and it is hard to decide which one is best or better than the others. I would not want to let any of them go.

But one thing is for sure, the BigBen is a box that surprised me and got me loving it from the first second I saw and heard it!

Does it chime, on the hour :-D .

      It should :w00t:
Play AC/DC's 'Hells Bells' avery hour, and it will :-P Hey Max, is the Benny's subwoofer self contained (sealed) so as to move more air?

Well, as far as I know it is an active speaker just like the other ones and it not sealed from the rest of the system :hmmm: .
I haven't opened Ben yet though and probably won't do so anyway. I think the infamous old busdriver posted some pics in a descrition of one of his YT videos though :hmmm:

I agree. It did sound very nice and clean. Great mid's and highs. Subwoofer gives it enough oomph and never got over bearing. I liked it but I didn't love it. My GX-300H still takes top honors in sound and clarity. My Ben is on its way to its new owner who will appreciate it more than I did.

I think MasterBlaster84 (Don) brought one to the Nor Cal Meet. We played it, but didn't get as much face time with it as I would have liked.

The problem was that Norm broke out his A5 early on and everything seemed under powered after that :-/

I would have liked to have heard the Big Ben in the house and with varying types of music....Hopefully next time

Even if the Big Ben was as crappy as the Magnivox D8443, the looks alone make it a keeper, It is just undeniably Beautiful and your's looks great Max, great score
