Reminder of how silly ebay can get.

1) look at this auction
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-PANASON ... 4cfcf61610

then compare:
2)
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4 ... w=rx-ct900

and

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4 ... w=rx-ct950

Top of the line? what? Gotta love ebay...

I could be wrong, but none of these seem to be a 4 X 4 amp set up, just XBS. Claret Bager has the 980 I think. That's the best platinum series boomer I've ever seen...

Just a plain RX-CT780 went for $75.00 plus shipping recently...viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13224

I do want to get the RX-CT900 (don't mind a 950 as well) simply for sentimental purposes. Most people here go for anything in the RX-DT series (the 4x4 ones you mentioned), so I ended up getting one of those (DT680). I'm glad I researched this forum enough before potentially getting ripped off on ebay :-D

Although i do love the Panasonic Rx DT series, the least favourite model for me is the DT680,i do have this Model, but with it having CD,thats a Potential problem, because they are 20 years old now and the CD lasers are about ready to pop,and i'm not sure you can buy a new laser for these,i've had a few 680s and all of the ones i owned all had a problem with the cd jumping or not playing,so the ideal model would be 980-990,same or simular spec as the 680 but without CD..but with Aux in !

there are schematics that allow you to add an 'aux in' for the 680. But I guess since it isn't an original function of the boombox some people wouldn't dig it. The mixing mic in does ok, except it only plays one channel through both speakers  .

At any rate, I am happy to have a 680 that is fully functional - for now :-)

The problem I had with the RX-CT900 I owned was one day while cranking it the speaker surrounds literally fell apart - now if they had the same kind of surrounds that the RX-DT series had on their woofers and ran separates instead of a whizzer maybe I'd be more inclined to go get one...

Not all 680's skip. My first one did. The second one I got doesn't and I play bass heavy music with everything on max. All eq settings on 10, SXBS on 10, and volume on 10. This has got to be the best sounding box!! Bass extension is phenomenal, mids are strong and warm and u can crank it up with very little distortion. This box likes to be played loud it seems.

what is bass heavy music? I can only do that same exact thing with a jazz cd, and even then I run it with the eq flat and the SXBS at 5... do you think the volume on my unit is failing? I bought it from a seller who didn't really crank it much...

Rap, r and b, bass tracks which are are used to test speakers. I LOVE MY BASS! Especially deep bass!! The rx dt680 is a very impressive bass box. All that and still no skipping.
I have noticed that units that barely get any use don't play as cleanly ( more distortion) than units that are made to work. It seems as if Panasonic designed this box to be used hard.
