RX-CT-900/950 odd ones...

Has anyone had experience with the Panasonic ct-900 or 950?

If so,are they good models?How do they sound for bass and over all?What is the difference between the two?I do know the 950 is rated at 45W input.However,the big mystery to me is the fact that both of these models appear to have "wizzer" cones in the dust cap area of the speakers.Am I correct? .At the same time,they look to have the smaller round grills indicating dedicated tweeters.I don't think these were cheap models when they came out.In fact I believe them to be part of the "Platinum" series if I'm not mistaken.I thought wizzers typically were used to produce the higher frequencies without the extra expense of dedicated tweeters.Could they have both wizzers and dedicated tweeters? If any one knows ANYTHING AT ALL about these models,I'd like to know. THNX...

I have the 900, I think the 950 just adds remote control. These are excellent boxes and typically sell pretty inexpensively and are usually well worth what they sell for. I can't remember if these have fake tweeters or the cheapest plate tweeters but I can tell you they don't use real quality tweeters. That being said they do sound very good and they make a great general carry and use box.

Bill the tuner on mine has always worked fine and I'm in the burbs, I'm kind of curious what makes the tuner terrible for you?

I own a 900 . I got it very cheap and i like it.
It gets used most of all . Very good tuner on all wavebands and very deep bass.
It's no powerstation like the M 90 though.

mine is so lame and it seems to never pull in the station as good as some of the other boxes.
hmmmm do you live in a flat area.
these are the first of the platnium series of boomboxes. i think i could be wrong.
i do like mine and think it does sound quite good. if i am using it for the radio tho i usually go for something else.

I don't have these exact models but the one I have is similar looking.... something 780 or something like that. It was inexpensive but I like it -- possibly amongst the best value for the bucks. Good bass. Mine says XBS. Anyhow, those don't look like wizzer cones to me. Even if they were, however, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The Pioneer SK-900 also uses full range wizzer cones (no tweeters at all) and I hear no one complaining about the sound of that model. In fact, that might be the TOL model -- definitely top end.

I think we need to keep in mind that these boxes don't run 20hz to 20,000hz they are more commonly in the 100hz to 15,000hz range at best. Good full range speakers can cover this range fairly well.

If this is true,it's kind of bizarre.I had toyed with the idea that the tweeter grills actually just covered the stereo mics.It's interesting some think it has good bass.By this time in history ,hadn't all the manufacturers gone to ported bass reflex designs? Unless it's on the back,the only other way to get good bass would be larger than you'd expect woofers.Does anyone know the size of them on these boxes?

I 'm thinking this will be my next box to get.It has aux inputs Would anyone here say that it's reasonably loud?

This panasonic is the best boombox I've ever owned!!! I bought it for $20 at goodwill in louisville but now that I have one I don't know what I'd pay for another This thing hit's the ultimate highs and booms the deepest lows, better than all my lasonics and crown put together

I would, it may not blow your eardrums out but it's qualifies as reasonably loud.

I'm in a rolling hill area at the edge of the Sacramento Valley where the mountains start. I'm about 25 miles from most of the radio transmitters in my area.

its not as loud nor as full sounding as the other panasonics i have.
dt 707 and the 680 or 690.

the speakers on this one are a huge part of why it sounds great tho.
i believe they are very very low impedance like 2 ohm speakers and there is a odd little tweeterish looking horn thingy in the center of these speakers.

i do like it and it is pretty nice.

I have one of the 680s also.It is an incredible box.However,I always end up running my Ipod with the "treble boost" preset even if I run the 3.3 slider to +6 and the 10K slider to +10.No fault of the box and my hearing isn't that bad either.The 680 is hi-fi but lately I usually prefer my Telefunken TM6670 3-piece to pretty much anything else.It's a mid sized box with good bass though nowhere near the 680.Where it shines is its highs even when the EQ is set to flat.Of course that box doesn't have wizzers.In fact,I don't know what kind of tweeters it has.They look like very solid metal domes but without any conage involved.They certainly don't look like cheap metal plates.Whatever that box has for highs really delivers though!

Besides liking the looks of the 900/950 series,what intrigued me the most is its possible use of the wizzer cones for highs.As I said my experience with a box so equipped wasn't a good one.The highs were naturally quite sharp (this I loved naturally) but it was the bass that was terrible on that box (sloppy not tight).Its wizzers sounded really good to me and I've been looking for another box with a little quality to bring the sound together is a much more appealing way.With the bass of the 900 comments here I'm thinking I might really like these.I still say they look like wizzers

they sound terrific == smooth , loud and very thumpy base-

this entire non-bi-amp series platinums is a spectacular low budget
surprise -
my model is the 650 --
its more compact -- with a single deck and an analogue tuner

I have an RX-CT900 also. It sounds very impressive. I can crank the volume on mine practically all the way up, and it won't distort. I don't use it though because in my opinion it's too ugly and modern looking for my liking.

At least it has a square look, it's not an egg. A transitional box of sorts, the evolution between the classic boxes and the eggs.
