Riverfire memories

Hi Guys,

I admit I am very new to Boomboxery. I did however grow up in the 80s and always enjoyed the big power and presence of ghettoblasters in my youth. I always had my good ol' Sanyo at hand whilst attending the FM104.5 river fire. This event was a huge nightime fireworks display in Brisbane, QLD where the fireworks display was synchronised to rock music played over the local radio station. If you had a big, powerful radio on hand, you enjoyed a much more enhanced viewing/listening experience. Bystanders always thanked me for providing the big audio as it really did make a huge difference to the display. Throw in a F111 flyover including afterburners at the end of the show to provide the climax.

There weren't that many of us prepared to carry a heavy beast all night tearing through $30 of D cells in one night! :dunce:

They always transmitted the radio conversations between the pilot and control tower from take off to when the pilot hit the afterburners so you always knew how far out the F111 was!!

Great memories! Now where did that old Sanyo go?! The riverfire event is still staged to this day. I might just take down my newly acquired (and now fixed) Hitachi TRK-9140 this year for old times sake!

Anyone care to share their own period 80s memories when these beasts were really kicking ass on the street, or the train, or the bus? ;-)

James.. :-) .

Another member from Brisbane....sweet!! What Sanyo did you originally have??

The first riverfire i went to would have been like only 10 years ago...bit too late to see plethora of boxes. Not my fault i was only born in 83 haha.

Hi Scotty,

It was a Sanyo C4.

I have no idea where it ended up. I actually rang my parents last night to check but they haven't seen it lately either. :sadno:

I'm actually on the lookout for a local C4 to pick up for old times sake though

My ebay pet hate: "Local pick up only" It seems that every interesting boombox is in either WA, SA or Victoria.

Certainly not the prettiest unit I have ever owned, but boy, it sure is the heaviest! When I received the unit from Ebay, I picked it up and due to the weight, I thought, great he has included 10 free D cells. Only after checking the battery compartment did I realise this 11.2 kg beast was batteryless!!

We visited the local park yesterday (Sunday) to celebrate mothers day with the extended family and kids. I brought along the Hitachi for some tunes. I had it running for 4.5 hours and the battery level indicator still said full batteries - I'm not sure how accurate these meters are but it still had some punch!

Today at work, my fingers are still sore after carrrying the thing around the day before!! I must be getting old! ;-)

Well James, that's a box and a half for sure. I wish I had one.

How about you, Scotty and myself catch up some time and do some blasting? I know Scotty is up for it!

I'm at Boondall.

That photo makes the 9140E look bigger than it is!!

I'm at Mansfield (southside). I'm still not 100% happy with the outright performance of this unit. It has improved markedly with some maintenance but it still distorts when you turn the volume up over 1/3rd. I think a recap may be in it's future. I would love to hear a fully fit 9140E for comparison purposes.

I would definately be interested in a get together.... maybe after I get this thing sorted. I don't want to get blasted into the weeds by you guys. :-)

Talk soon,

James.... :-)

I've got a C4  :-D and that sucker can crank like nobody's business but I don't take it out because it's one of those 3 piecers where the handle has to be up to lock the speakers on :annoyed: . Also have a Fisher PH-418 like that
What a dumb ass design! :dunce: :dunce:
:-D
But they are both still nice boxes though!
