OK so I "had" to pounce on badboybill's 920. Never owned one before, but always liked all the chrome and LED's. Also, having all the controls on the front is a plus in my book. Also, BLACK speaker grills.....
..... the ONLY way to do it with a silver box.
I was pleasantly surprised by the low-volume bass.
Made possible by what look like rolled foam surrounds, which allow the woofer to start moving sooner than it would if it had paper/pulp surrounds. End result: Better low-volume bass than an M70, at the expense of midrange clarity. Seriously, this box has all the highs & lows it needs.
No Loudness switch is necessary.
But this performance comes at a cost.........it can't produce really accurate mids, because the woofer surrounds are too mobile & buzzy if you know what I mean.
Also, the overall "precision" or "accuracy" of the sound is only average, so I doubt if the circuitry (amps, caps etc.) is as high-quality as JVC or Panasonic.
Put it this way, if you want to listen to jazz, orchestra, vocals, or classic rock, get a JVC or Panasonic. But for stuff like hiphop, movie soundtracks, dubstep......get a 920.
Overall, if you want to know what other boxes it sounds like, I'd say it sounds similar to a Bolt Box, or a Crown 850. All 3 of those boxes have very good low-volume bass, in similar amounts. In terms of the tweeters, the 920's are the loudest. In terms of overall sound quality and precision, I would put it above the Bolt Box, but below the Crown 850.
Other likes......The bass, treble, and balance kobs have solid center detent positions.
The tuner light can be left on or off.
Permanently attached AC cord in the battery compartment.
Cool power button.
Build quality? Well it's built better than the black Lasonics, but not as good as the big-name brands like JVC etc. If you press on the sides or back of it, it squeaks. But I expected that. The good news is that the knobs & switches "feel" better than I expected for a Lasonic.
21.5" long, 11.5" high, and 5.5" thick. 16.1 lbs without batteries.
