hey guys, does anyone have any experience renting boomboxes to be used in movies/tv shows? I was contacted today through ebay by someone claiming to be from a major tv show asking to rent a certain box...I talked to them and it seems legit, just wondering if anyone here has done this before. How much would you charge?

I have dealt with the TV and Movie industry and Hollywood in general and they don't care. If they are in a jam, they will promise the world and even money, but once they have what they want, they don't give a rat's ass and there is a good chase your property will be damaged and or not returned. Production companies have a high rate of personnel turn overs and your contact person could be on the next project, fired or dead and your property goes home with someone on the set, into the trash or lost in a storage building!

I would never lend a radio, a car, my house or anything to the film industry.

Remember, the person who is contacting you is under tremendous pressure to perform and to show the boss they can deliver. And since there are literally thousands of fools willing to be someones Hollywood "Grunt" just to get into the biz, they will promise the world to get what they need at that moment.

That's 44 years of living in Southern California, Playing with my band in Hollywood and even working on TV's shows.

I've done this. My J1 Jumbo is in a music video with Fdot1 from the UK. Just recently saw the video and they cut me out of it :'-( I didn't ask for money. The experience was enough for me. It was pretty cool to say the least. I didn't have to police the radio because I told them up front to please be careful with the radio, and they where too. I wasn't far from the radio at all and the day went pretty fast from all the fun I had.

:agree: what I would do, and have done is sell high and if unit is in same condition you buy back at lower price. This way your covered ;-)

I have quite a bit of experience with this...it's VERY stressfull  . If you can't be there with your boxes, then DON'T do it. I have done multiple projects over the last couple of years all for free, but i was there the entire time and was well treated, and made some great new friends...i brought them to the set, and brought them home after the set

This is ideal, if you could do this, then your safe or safer.

I was just remembering this too (PingPong Summer). If you can do as 'Gsbdbmr' did, then don't do it. Insist that You carry it to & from the set yourself each day or are there within line of sight.

To rent your boombox? I would never allow anyone to touch it. NEVER DO IT! They will trash your precious boomer. After all who want that kind of money? :nonono: :nonono: :nonono:

Didn't someone rent some boxes for 'Ping Pong Summer' recently? I wonder how that movie is coming along :-)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2402985/

if it was the one that was supposed to take place in ocean city the guy emailed me about it but after a few email i never heard from him again, if i was to rent a box i would ask for the full value plus 10 percent up front , so if nothing else i would have the money to not care .and if it actually came back the way it left i would just deduct the rental fee and refund the rest with only a verbal contract binding from the start. or i would just sell them a box

Wanted to give you guys a quick update. Against (most) of your advice, i decided to go for it. Life is short!

Anyway, my boombox is going to be on the tv show glee! I don't really watch the show much myself...but then again, I don't think I'm their target audience. The guy who I worked with has been very professional and nice. Hopefully it will be in pretty good condition when i get it back, which should be on tuesday. They apparently fabricated a battery cover, which was previously missing, so it's possible i'll get it back in better condition than i sent it out in :-) Lea Michele signed the back of it, which makes it a pretty amazing collectors piece for a "gleek." :-D

I'll post some pics when I get it back. Here is the episode it will be featured in:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2403589/

it airs on feb 7th. Hopefully it will get some pretty good screentime!

That is awesome man! I gotta say though, If I was not present, I would not let them touch any of my boxes ;)

I had someone approach me for this once, decided not too in the end as they were not going to accept any liability!
