Hi, I'm new here.

I am trying to find a smallish boombox with aux in and decent sound quality as an alternative to crappy computer speakers.

I would like it to have led metering or VDU (or both !)

Something along the lines of a SHARP QT77, boxy and longish.

Silver or colored red or white would be my preference.
Sound quality is the deal breaker. I defiantly am not into tinny speakers !

Any recommendations from the pros ?

Its on ebay (germany) at the moment for €3.50 but I expect it will go for a bit more.

Definitely got a line in because it says so on the switch.

Nicest stereo I've ever seen. Pure 80s design. There's not a hint of 70s or 90s on it. Simply perfect.

I want one !
Me too, but that mint red on one the pic reached 160 euros on ebay. That's at least 200 euros with shipping within Europe.

I think that it would be interesting to replace original speakers with ones from 2.1 system, and put Sub woofer below the table. I use ridiculously tiny Creative 2.1 SBS 350 with not more than 60mm diameter speakers and sub woofer. It sounds incredible. Like that it is a hoax, since speakers are so tiny.

I think you'd do well to look for a Mini Compo unit. These would to a much better job sound-wise as they're much better featured than normal minis and have a great deal more volume. Of course you'll get much better stereo separation too from the the detachable speakers. These are marvels of 80s design and share the best parts of mini and threepiecer styles and most have nice LED meters too.

Theres usually stay on the low end of the pricing spectrum as their more of an 'in-between' size and shape.

You can read up more on the magic of mini compos here:

Food for thought anyway!

I didn't pay more than $30 for any of mine, but none were bought through ebay.

These are a bit of an anomaly online, price wise, as they can go very cheap, but occassionally go for a bomb.

They sit between the 'cheap mini' and 'high end threepiece' sections of the boombox market and therefore
seem to have a lot play in their prices.

I would bet you could find one of these locally, in fully working condition with a bit of effort.

I'm no Mini expert that's for sure. But there are still some Mini's out there that are PACKED with features. Line in can just be the start of it all. But of course price goes up OR you go looking in the wild and hope you can find something. I tend to see mini's at Estate Sales.

This GE is a simple, low cost mini, has a Line in, 4 speaker system and basic functions....get's pretty damn loud and the sound quality is good even and higher volumes, but of course lacks the big bass BUT the sound is so good, you hardly miss it.

Paid $12.00 Found at estate sale

This Toshiba....a little bit more bang for your buck and I only paid $15 for it!

Soft touch controls, Loudness, short wave, dual antenna's, song skip, line in and out 4 speaker system plus much much more!

Found at the swap meet.
