what kind of stations do you have in your area?

i live in md & dont have much to choose from

mostly
pop/rap
country

we have jack fm thats ok sometimes
& one classic rock station 100.7
theres no 80's station or oldies station

but i do get one in PA 961 wsox that plays 60's 70's 80's but plays alot of the same songs everyday at different times

Here in the Boston Media Market, it's pretty much the same thing, minus the country music - I only know of two country stations, and one is technically not the Boston market.
We have had a major shake-up in our radio market in the last several months. Many long-standing stations were unceremoniously re-formatted to pop music. Most of the stations share the same "ten-or-so track playlist." In the upper register of the dial, it's difficult to distinguish one station from another. It has nothing to do with art and/or entertainment. It's all about what sells. Content doesn't generate revenue - but ad sales sure do.
I have also noticed a reduction in the number of stations in this market. And the stations that exist, for the most part, have very strong signals. Quite frankly, the fact that terrestrial broadcast radio may be "on the outs" is palpable. Some day that beautiful lighted tuner dial on your blaster or hi-fi may be nothing more than a pretty decoration.
There are a couple of college stations that I sometimes listen to. But college radio tends to be a little avant garde for my taste.

In the Knoxville Tn. area we have a little bit of everything, more new pop though than the others. Guess were just lucky?

In my area (Springfield, Ma) I have pretty much everything. Rap,pop, country,classic rock, oldies, heavy metal rock, a bunch of college stations, easy listening, smooth jazz.

In Brisbane, Qld 104.5 FM (MMM) was the original rock station. I remember when they started out, it was station policy to only offer advertising space to 'cool' advertisers. You would only hear ads from surf shops, record outlets etc. No ads about tampons etc!! It was that way for years. They now play rock from all eras but they seem to concentrate on 80s stuff.

BBC Radio 1 - National FM 97.7-99.7 range - Latest pop hits and new releases Alternative genres in the evening.
BBC Radio 2 - National FM 88-90.2 range - Some current pop, but mainly 60s-90s oldies and a few new releases.
BBC Radio 3 - National FM 90.2-92.6 range - Classical mainly, Jazz, World Music
BBC Radio 4 - National FM 92.5-94.5 range also 198khz Long Wave - News, Drama, Fiction, Comedy, Shipping Forecasts.

The BBC main National TX's are normally 250 KW each. Local relays / fill ins are a lot less.

Heart 96.4 - Hits from the 70s 80s 90s and today - gets a bit predictable and samey.

Zack FM 105.3 - Run by an American, mainly for Americans over here on the bases. Not too bad, a lot of classic hits on rotation and some specialist shows.

Classic Gold - 1251 KHZ AM - Golden oldies on rotaion - could do with a bit more variety and a better signal strength.

BBC Five Live - Sport on 693 and 909 AM

Kiss 106.4 - Urban and Dance music - BIG signal at 20KW + 3 lower powered relays.

RWS FM 103.3 - Hospital based station about 10 miles away which I can just pick up. Some decent output.

We have pretty much all the areas covered here in 'Ducks country' but I like MY own music best and mostly listen to My iPod , etc. Too much DJ talking and commercials.

need to admit that i like fm radio and not ipods, etc -
the talking djs give me a heads-up for what going on in town-
lots provide lots of laughs -
and good talk about the brand new music and the musicians-
plus --never hurts ( too much , usually ) to hear the news, sports and weather

Unfortunately there are very few self owned so called "mom and pop" radio stations anymore, so chances are you'll hear the same music played in the top 200 US markets. All those markets will have pretty much the same variety of stations, adult contemporary, rap/urban, rhythmic, pop, country, some form of rock, sprinkle in a small variety of other music formats and that's it. 90% of all stations are owned by 3 companies CBS, which I work for, Clear Channel and Cumulus. This is why they all have very similar programming. The formula: play the hits and when you're can't stand to hear those songs anymore, play them some MORE. Some music directors mix up the recurrent songs (older hits) a little more than others, which is nice so you can't guess every song that's going to play every hour but other than that all stations are pretty much programmed the same. It's amazing how the corporate/sales people look at radio and ratings now, it can be broke down to minutes of every hour to see when people tune in and tune out and that's how they formulate the programming. You're probably asking yourself, why and the hell is he typing all this? truthfully I'm wondering the same thing it's because my friends are constantly asking (and telling) me why radio sucks? and why does every station play the same songs? So I figured some of you might think and wonder the same things and I totally understand, I don't listen to mainstream radio when I'm not working, I get it. A great program director I worked for broke it down to me like this, If ESPN has the choice between broadcasting a RedSox Vs Yankees game or a Royals Vs Indians game which one do you they they're going to choose? same thing in radio, play the hits and it works.. because if it didn't, every radio station in every city wouldn't be doing and playing the same songs.
