Q. about Onkyo TX-910 and my Bose 501s

So, I've barely dabbled in the home stereo thing.. Well, not dabbled much at all really. I love records and we picked up a record player with it's own amp and a big box of (PRISTINE!!!) records for $5. The records sound great going into the line-in while using the amp that came with the player.

My question is this: We wired up my M70 to the system to, and can't understand why the M70 sounds WAY better than the Bose speakers. I mean, I know my M70 is UNBELIEVABLE, but sheesh. We're talking Bose here. The Onkyo was only $10. It is 45 watts per channel. It seems like my speakers lack a lot of the mid range. One thing, too.... I know these stereo systems usually have an EQ component one can always buy, but STILL. My M70 was hooked up to the same thing as the speakers.

I'm thinking of putting those BOSE back in the Subaru. Even so, only certain types of music sound really good on those things... Like Prince... anything with lots of highs and lows... Yes sounds AMAZING.

I think you answered your own question here. Bose is Bose, an arrogant company who specialise in marketing and the perception of high end. They won't relese any specs on their speakers because they would look bad. Most people serious about sound wont go near them, except maybe the 901.

I find that you can clearly hear the missing bandwidth/s in bose speakers. Back in the day they had a mountain of electronics (eq's etc) hidden behind the demo walls in stores, this "sound" was sold to customers who had to return to buy "upgrades" to match it Linn & Naim seem to have learnt from Bose.

I hope I don't get sued for this but Bose corp this is my personal opinion

hmm.. i've been running an onkyo tx108 for a year or so and i can make even my simple pioneer speakers sound great. i suspect something is wrong with your speakers. it may be the way you are hooking them up, or they may need restoration. In short, i doubt the issue is the Onkyo.

im currently still running the onkyo but switched to vintage polk sda speakers and they sound amazing. i can shake the floor on the first level of the house, and the apeakers are upstairs.

i suspect if your bose was restored your records would sound great on them.

or..upgrade to a tx108. perhaps i should use an equalizer with it, but ive found no need to.

restocat is probably on to something. I would say your Onkyo doesn't have the power those 501s want, even if they are rated at around that amount. It is also possible that your surrounds are shot, or your crossover has an issue (usually odd for both speakers). I'm not a huge fan of Bose, but they shouldn't sound THAT bad. With it's lower wattage (which is fine for most floor speakers) the amp may clip at higher volumes and damage the speakers. I like Onkyo and recommend their line of receivers to a lot of people. I just know from using a pair of 501's at a record shop I worked in that they like their power. This is usually the case with suspension style speakers. I recall the 501's being suspension.
