I think it's time we once and for all make a dedicate sticky post about all the 931 variations . I attempted to do this ages ago and now can't find the post.

With Frank's one with yet another deck key variation i think it brings it up to either seven or eight variations.

I'll get on this tonight when I get home from work. In the meantime, can everyone post their photos of their 931's here?

I know someone (maybe blu_fuz?) has the rare edition with the different coloured graphics around the power button and elsewhere.

Rick this is a great idea that I pondered doing for the sake of cataloging the many different variations of 931.
Im not sure how i feel about the theory of first second or third editions and if there is any proof positive to back that theory up.
I called Lasonic today to find out if there were any veteran employees still there from back in the eighties.
I wanted to see if I could gather any info in regards to production and to maybe shed some light on the variations.
No luck there. All the employees are brand new.
When you start the thread I think all 931 owners should post up all the specifics of their 931 and hopefully a date code if available.
Show pics of differences
Single antenna vs dual
Soft touch
Auto reverse
Inputs/ outputs
Headphone jack or lack of
Tuner bands
VU location
Graffics differences
Deck key differences
I have already taken pics of mine and gathered the date code

I am floored that Hemi can't find the deck keys needed, but am more stoked that we will finally, once and for all answer some of these nagging questions.

I don't even OWN an 931 (yet) and I want answers!

There is enough expertise on this site from all the old school 931 owners to make this happen!

This is what an actual date code looks like usually...

Ok, not to hijack the thread but, my label is wore and I can make out the 8704 in blue ink? :hmmm:
Many variations its seems, yes.

Yep there are many variations due to Lasonic using different manufacturing plants. Could possibly be 1987!!!

What I know (bbbill can elaborate on):

The round corner was for sure the "2nd" edition if you only are considering the shape of the box.....

931 Editions are fun because there are SOOOO many!

All corners were square until the "3rd" edition came out.
1st edition:
Led's on right

2nd edition(s):
Led's on left, dual antenna, brown power button decal
Led's on left, dual antenna, yellow/blue power button decal
Led's on left, single antenna, yellow/blue power button decal
(these also had variations for the position of the headphone jack, not sure which for what without searching)

3rd edition:
Dual cassette, rounded box corners

4th edition:
CDX-931 dual cassette, CD player, rounded corners

5th edition:
i931 ipod dock

6th edition:
i931x ipod and ipod touch dock

7th edition:
i931Bx ipod and ipod touch dock, and blue tooth

Joe you have a date code on yours. I believe that box is one of the 1st made 2nd editions because of the color on power switch. But I could be wrong. Even now Lasonic is making the I931 cases differently. I have smooth glossy ones and rough flat ones. It's kind of weird how they produce them in different ways!!!

^ correct Bill, I tried to put them in order of release for the 2nd generation:

2nd edition(s):
Led's on left, dual antenna, brown power button decal (earliest)
Led's on left, dual antenna, yellow/blue power button decal (came after brown power decal boxes)
Led's on left, single antenna, yellow/blue power button decal (cutting costs started using 1 antenna instead of 2 as previously)
(these also had variations for the position of the headphone jack, not sure which for what without searching)
