I have couple of GFs. Now I'm looking to buy few more. Could you guys advice on the number series, is bigger the better, newer, louder or what?

I hear good things about the 9696 and then nothing on the 9797. Why is that?

The 9797 is much smaller than the 9696 and I believe not that great soundwise.
However, it all comes down to personal prefrences.
In my opinion the GF-999 is the nicest GF out there but others may say it's the 9696 or the 1000.
Anyhow, you can't go wrong with the GF767, 777, 909, 919, 999, 1000, 9696 and 9494. I also recommend the 9595 for its great quality.

If you are talking midsize, the 9494 and 9696 are the best sounding ones, IMO.

But if you are talking about the big ones, the 999 and 1000 are the best looking IMO, and I believe the 1000 has additional "bracing" inside. Much more rare than a 777. There are at least a dozen 777's on Ebay every week here in the US.

Thanks guys.

So, what's up with the numbers then? What do they mean? Are they just randomly picked model markings or what?

I could get my hands on GF-9797, like right now, but it's not cheap. Actually it's rather expensive. I have 9191 and 9494 and I love them, but how is this 9797 compared to these others I have. I need somekind of benchmarking or something, you know.

I think I wanna get it.

I've got a few GF's including the 9191 and 9494 and they're among my favourite boxes...not sure of the logic behind the numbers...they also have different numbers for bascially the same model depending where in the world it was sold. All my GF have been less than £50 though...what are they asking for the 9797?

Couple of hundred euros maybe, it's not certain yet. It's not the money, I have it and I have it to spend. It's just that usually these boxes are practically given away up here in Scandinavia...

Couple of hundred euros (about £170 I reckon) isn't too far out for such a box, the 9494 can go for £100 to £150 easily...mine were bargains to be fair.

Hey if they're giving them away in Finland I might come on a visit...the wife is looking at holidays to Sweden or Finland at the moment so I must encourage her lol :-D

You really should encourage her and come up here. And go to a flee market, you might luck out! The smaller little country side town the better, people really don't think that these old things are worth anything. Well, there are exceptions. This thread only proves it...

Cheers

Okay, by now I've learned from your replies and by a smallish web study I made, that GF-9797 is a "digital radio" and retailed about double compared to other same size boxes way back when. I've also learned that Sharp's model numbering logic is not linear by any means.

But the scrupling still continues. Now I found myself in the situation where both 8989 and 9797 are with in my reach and after a very modest haggling they both sat on price level that is very tempting. I mean, to get one of them, I made a firm desicion not to get both of them.

What's GF-8989 like then? Better / worst than GF-9797?

Well I've got an 8989 but not a 9797...the 9797 is a better class of box all round....if I had a choice of the two at the same price I'd go 9797 no question :)

I love it! I like the sound, it's maybe not so loud, but it has kind of hi-fi feeling in it. I love the super accurate digital tuner also.

The box was recently promoted from "bedroom box" to "kitchen box", that's what I listen when I do my 'to-die-for-gourmet-cooking'.

I use the radio and occasionally I use it with my Technics turntable. It's a nice semi-mobile package with SL-3210, the pre-amp and the RIAA equalization for vinyls works perfectly!

I'm starting to understand why the retail price was so high way back when... Awesome box altogether!

Cheers

Great to see! I'm betting it's the 9797E version snd has phono in only.
This model draws 40 watts and if it's the E version it supposedly puts out 16 watts per channel! ! ;) :0
