Hi Guys,

A little while ago I posted a wanted ad here for an aussie Sanyo M9998K. I wasn't after a minter but I did want a unit with good internals with a working deck. Now I know what you're thinking, "who would sell a fully working M9998"? :-P There is something about the style of this late 70s monster I like - super build quality, nice sound and a mean look - what's not to like?! :w00t:

I'd had no response to my wanted thread until aussie member Alfie P.M'd me with a trade offer. He had an M9998K with a working deck (recently serviced). He said it did need a clean up though and needed a few parts to make it complete.

Fast forward a week and the Sanyo comes in the best packed box I've ever seen - Alfie had literally stuffed half a foam mattress + a kilogram of bubble-wrap into that box!!

After 10 minutes of cutting, tearing and swearing I had the Sanyo out in the sunlight! She was in need of a bath but the deck was working fine as promised. The heads on this unit looked brand new with zero signs of wear.

Fast forward 2 hours and I had the chassis back in, pots cleaned, a few new parts fitted including new antennas. This unit did have the hard to find, original RCA caps and battery tubes included too.

All I can say is wow!! I finally have a fully working M9998K - I've literally never seen a real life working M9998K deck (and I've seen a few M9998s)!!

Both channels are even and strong in output. The tuner sensitivity of this unit is excellent. The signal strength VU jumps straight to max on all local stations. It even gets good reception with the antennas retracted. My other 2 M9998s could never get over 1/2 strength indicated with the antennas fully extended!

Strong FM tuner on this one:

I've been making a few tape recordings via the Line In and the quality is outstanding. The on-board recordings really are high quality. The Line In sensitivity is also much higher with this particular unit.

It has a few marks on top and the grills are a little rusty so I'm thinking of transferring the chassis to a nicer front cabinet I've got here but for now I'm happy to just listen to some Hi Fi tunes on this baby!

I'd like to put a word out to Alfie by thanking him for his efforts. He really did help me out with my goal of securing a healthy M9998K - on a very limited budget, help from a fellow collector really has made my boombox dream come true.

James.... :-)

Nice! ALL boxes should have feet like that, to absorb the vibrations from all that epic bass
