Panasonic RX-DT680 Discriminated...

Panny RX-DT680 is such a nice box one can have but doesn't got the looks of the 80s gems of that past.
Most 80s boxes would pee in their pants if listening to the bass of 680.
It also got a full remote...CD player, 2 cassette...digital tuner... oh mama!

Why it is so cheap these days?

I wonder!!!!!

That Platinum series from Panasonic makes some epic boxes. I've got the 650 and it murders some of my so called grails in terms of sound.

I've noticed those 680s start to creep up in price in Europe.

Best $20 I've ever spent on a box! Overall , the 680 is one of the best sounding box made, if not the loudest. Not hugely popular for various reasons though including the lack of a proper line in.

lack of a line/aux in is probably the main reason why.. but there are other Panasonic bi-amped models that have proper aux in using the same speaker/amp.. and those to go for cheap too.. hey good thing is you dont have to spend a fortune for great sound.. so..

I see these (in poor condition) all the time in thrift stores....$15-$20. I never buy them. I have told myself the cut off point is NO cd players!

mines gone now (no surprise there eh)but mine was £45 which i thought was very reasonable-the dt680 is a fantastic example of one of the best of the very last true ghetto blasters in my opinion.the sound really does surpass many older machines

Yes, one of the best ghettoblasters that sounds better than many $1000+ grails.

Oh, I have no doubt about the sound quality. But if I start collecting this style of radio I will quickly run out of room. I see cd boomboxes regularly. Its a slippery slope and I have little self control

Actually prices aren't that low, I have seen these go for as high as $200 on Ebay. And then there's shipping you have to worry about, they are harder to protect than a typical boombox.

The ones I have seen in thrift stores are always POUNDED, beat up missing parts and ALWAYS marked "CD Not Working". I know this next generation of boomboxes blow away our classics in the sound department. Time and Technology always marches on.

My advice Chris is to not sample the sound from this particular model Panny. It will probably screw with your head and make you think some of your much loved 70s / 80s 1 & 3 pierces now sound under powered.

I bought a JVC PC-X300 (another late 80s cd box) recently for the equivalent of $20 and when I heard it play I was like 'oh boy' as it destroyed my just serviced Aiwa 880! Deep bass, little distortion... I'm thinking these in-between (the classic boomers and eggs) boxes will get more sought after down the line.

JVC PC-X300 is a another GREAT sounding box! It got a BIG volume knob also. They will destroy many high priced 80s incredible hulks.

I remember, seeing these on the shelves in 1994-1995,
and regret now for not buying it then and keeping the original box.
