Not much sound from my new little Hitachi.

Everything seems to work, it's just there's hardly any sound from the radio or the tape deck. Tape deck runs fine, rewinds, fast forwards, etc, it's just that there's no volume. Same with the radio. Stations tune in, but you can barely hear anything. The volume sliders are really staticy so I know they'll need detox cleaning. Any idea what the problem may be? I can try and post a video if that helps. The box is a Hitachi TRK-7100H

Any advice would be great!

Thanks for moving this to a much better spot! I know most probably wouldn't even bother restoring this little box, but it's the exact model I had as a kid, otherwise I probably wouldn't bother either, lol

The first thing for me would be to try and give the controls a really thorough cleaning. You might even consider a partial disassembly of the pots and switches. Who knows... that might be all it needs.

Ok the coolest thing just happened. I tapped a few times on the record button, and suddenly it works, lol Someone on the facebook page suggested this. It's still very staticy so I'll be opening it up and cleaning all the controls anyway. I'm just so happy to have my little childhood boombox back again, lol I had this one back in 82 I believe, or maybe earlier. It then travelled with me to school in Philadelphia where I lived on my own for the very first time, so this little thing was my main source of entertainment. I remember buying Flock Of Seagulls' first album and playing it in my tiny apartment, lol A memories! lol

Yep the old record bar , I was going to say that but I didn't want to sound like a broken record lol.
Those damned record bars are almost always dirty after sitting unused .

Me too. Opening up the box and working the ol' record bar will often cure all manner of ills, it seems to the nerve centre.

My heart dropped when it wasn’t working. I actually got a little depressed, so silly! But now I’m happy again, waiting for a new can of detox coming from amazon.com, lol

Thanks so much everyone!

Fortunately I’ve never had to go through detox, lol. I stick to beer and weed every so often, lol

I find it very refreshing to see a BB up and working again after a good dose of TLC by a caring owner. For me, the size, make, model. age, street cred value etc., etc. don't matter as much as the new life given to even the most humble BB. Well done and congrats on your fruitful efforts.
