Hi all,

I just joined the forum as I'm getting the bug for a second box.

I bought a Sharp GF-777E last year having been raised on old-school electro/hip-hop ... The GF-777 is boxed with manual etc. fulling working and almost perfect condition. I now have the bug to find a playmate for it and I'm browsing around as to what the next box should be. Considering a VZ-2500 on eBay at the moment for playing some vinyl but I'm interested in the more exotic portables too to decorate my music room. Suggestions welcomed :-)

I wondered what years the 777 was available vs. the VZ and whether they are from a 'matching' period?

Cheers.

Welcome aboard! :breakdance:

And congrats on that boxed and minty GF-777! The Sharp VZs are pretty cool! I personally prefer the VZ-2000, looks much cooler  They don't sound as strong as they are big and heavy though. Too much bass would probably rattle the box and scratch the records you're playing.
If you're mainly interested in the coolest looking boxes you might be interested in some of these: Sharp GF-9696, Crown CSC-850 / CSC-980, Sharp VZ-2000, Conion C-100f / C-126f / TC-999, Toshiba RT-S90, JVC RC-M90, National RX-7200 ... eh, well, the list goes on. Anyhow, most of these are hard to find and very expensive.

Thanks Zippy. I'll look up some images of those boxes, I'm familiar with the C-100f already. I think 'hard to find' is kinda what I'm looking for :-)

Welcome aboard, riotofmyown. :-) You can determine the year of manufacture for Sharp boomboxes by looking at the serial number. The first digit will give you the year. For example, SN 2491833209 would be 1982, 19382705400 would be 1981, etc.

Thanks Fatdog, that makes it nice and easy. The 777 I have here is 1981 then.

Love my VZ2000.

Have to I sold my 2500 when I got my 2000. The 2000 (if you can get a good un) is the one to have.

Cheers. I will keep my eye out for a 2000, I think I'll go for the 2500 too though as it turns out it's around the corner from me and looks pretty decent.

Picked up a very nice 9191 - will be great to carry round in my old VW bus :-)

I have a VZ-2500 on the way too, hopefully as good as my other two boxes. The collection is slowly starting ...

Don't blame us when you have to move to a bigger house to accommodate your boombox collection.

Congratulations!

Thanks guys.

Fatdog - I've plenty of space, I have a second house as my man-cave for when I'm working, which is where I'll be hoarding stuff.

Home is Ireland but work is UK.

And today I got the VZ-2500 which is a real minter!

I might start being brave and look for fixer-uppers too :sin:

You can definitely get some better deals that way. Plus, once you work on your first boombox, the rest aren't so intimidating. ;-)

Space Is the Place has one of the best song intros ever.
