New Ebay find! Sanyo M4500K

Hi Guys,

Well I've just taken delivery of another Ebay box. Well my 100% record is still intact: You know, the record where every 'fully operational' ebay box I've purchased has failed a basic functions test. Yes, the tape deck doesn't play, but it does FFWD and RWD ok. The tuner works. The Left & Right VU work, however, the battery VU meter is dead. The main issue is that between the time he posted the Ebay auction and the time I picked up the unit, his daughter had dropped the radio on it's head and cracked the top board and tuner glass!! :-/  Even the little aerial retaining tab didn't escape damage!

Well after I pointed out the faults, the $51 box turned into a free box!! Can't argue about the price:

Now the question, do I turn this into a parts box or do I clean her up? The reason I ask is that I was hoping that the volume pot from this Sanyo M4500K may be the same as the volume pot from a Sanyo M9994K. I've got a rough M9994K that I can basically get working if I can source of working volume pot. They both have the same volume/balance arrangement and are from a similar era. :hmmm: They probably aren't the same but it's worth a try.

Please let me know if you are familiar with these two models with regard to the volume pots.

Thanks Guys,

James... :-)

Ahh i had this in my watch list to see what it went for. I bought one a few years back (for 20bux or so i think) and ended up sending it back to the seller
cause it was not as described, and also because i hated the size of it once I got it.

Whether you repair it or not is entirely up to how much you do or don't like it. If it was a radio I bought on a whim I'd write it off and pass
it on to somone else. If it's a model you really want, then I'd go all out and fix her up good and proper.

I've seen maybe 4 of these in 5 or so years, so they're not what I'd call common.

Rock On.

Wow!! I'd love a tuner window & a handle and metal ends if you have that stuff available. I will send you a PM tonight. :-)

I've been cleaning up this radio tonight and it's coming up well. After pulling the back off I discovered fresh, slightly damp sand in the bottom!! I'd say his daughter had it down at the local beach in the past couple of days!

I don't think the back has been off. The screws and threads are perfect. The screw holes were almostly perfectly full of dust!
All pots and controls are scratch free and work fine - that's a first for any radio I've ever bought!!

I've pretty much decided to restore this one as the sound is actually pretty nice. It actually has much better sound with more bass than my JVC RC-727 which is a 8 cell unit with Bass & Treble controls!

I know they vary from one example to another but this M4500K sounds pretty healthy.

James... :-)
