I recently got this nice 5150 that works except the motor is dead. No noise from it, reading 12V+ on the connection, measures very high resistance, like an open winding. The problem is, every motor I see on Bay the could work, the shaft is too short, and wouldn't hold the 3 capstans that go in it. Any help appreciated!

The original motor is MMI-6A2HKPD, but I have no idea what the speed or direction is.
If you just want the same motor you could buy this MMI-6A2HK and put your pulley on it.

I think its CCW rotation, but the shaft has three pulleys on it, so has to be long enough

I think they don't make longer shafts to fit 3 grooves for the pulleys. It has a standard length. The pulley with 3 grooves on it is made to fit regular motor shafts like MMI-6A2HK that caution suggested.

Thanks for the advice. That one from the Luxman could work, but I found a Mabuchi EG-530AD-2B that matches the specs and is cheaper, wonder if it would be as good?

In my experience, the MMI motors are more robust than the EG motors but as you say, cost is an issue and is something to consider. I "suspect" that it may work, it is certainly worth a try. In all likelihood, your old motor burned out because the belt expired and the motor ran continuously. On most boomboxes, the deck cannot reset itself to the ready position as they require the energy from a spinning capstan to do that, and when a belt becomes loose, breaks or melts, then the motors just runs forever. BTW, older original mabuchi motors were larger. The new ones on the bay are smaller and more fragile than the old stock ones, and they are made in China. Pretty sure Mabuchi is a japanese company so you can assume they are counterfeits and probably won't last as long.

Here are some photos showing the difference between OEM mabuchi motors and the eBay China ones. Note that the original ones have the label on the rear while the eBay ones are on the side. Note the size difference. The mounting holes are in the same places but of course the OEM ones have more room between the holes and case edge. Note the difference in the bearings. Also note that the OEM motors have mabuchi stamped on the steel plate on the spindle side. The eBay ones just have label to identify that it is mabuchi. I have some OEM mabuchi motors remaining. Contact me if you are interested.

Thanks lots for the info and pix Super Duper. My boombox is very clean inside, and the radio works, so I'd really like to fix the deck, hopefully I can get it all apart and back. Do you have an MMI motor I could use? If not, what would you like for the Mabuchi and postage?

Ok, how much would you like for one of your motors?

Thanks again Superduper for that motor! The 5150 tape deck lives again! I'm surprised I could wrangle those 3 belts around that capstan, but it's fixed. Haven't checked the speed yet, but it sounds close. I'm just waiting for the new tweeters.
