Which boombox should I bring to a birthday party that will be playing 80's music as a background via RCA jacks to an ipod/iphone? I was thinking my JVC RC-M70, but gotta tell ya, I may bring the Panasonic RX-5055 because of how loud it gets (if you need it), and the simple control layout on top with the big rotary volume knob for quick turn ups and downs for announcements, plus the 4 band EQ helps, oh and Ambience for sound projection. Any ideas?

I would take the Panasonic too. Just in case things got rowdy and the boombox took a tumble, I'd rather not have to pick up pieces of my beloved M70.

Thanks guys! Yea don't think the m70 will be going anywhere. That RX-5055F is an amazing boombox! Darn things crank for the size! I love it when people say how nice and loud these radios get and have great tonal quality too! My workhorse for sure!

 Redbenjoe, it's like a Panasonic RX-5050, but its a National RX-5055F with shortwave tuner, black back casing instead of grey, and no tape selector switch, but has a 12 volt DC car jack, where as the 5050 does not have that jack.

wow

i would trade my 5050 plus ramons entire collection - for that cool 5055 :-)

oh -
and if you want to get into more serious deliberations re this choice -- :hmmm: :-D

that sweet ambiance works great when the listener is alone and directly in front
of both speakers -
but for a party --its not a factor ( imho )

Oh yeah the knobs are different than standard 5050's. It has a small shoulder ring at base of knob. I also like the speaker grilles on another 5055 version...has small round holes with "stereo" in middle of speakers, instead of the plastic mesh grilles. I think the 5055F wins though for this friday nights party.

I have one of these too! They're thoroughly delightful!

This is one of the elite boxes that shouldn't need a the qualifier of 'for it's size' in regards to how good it's sound is.
It just plain sounds real good.

Rock On.

I'm not sure if the party already started, but in my experience, I would be taking a 3 piece or something which is just loud and doesn't require bass. I took my M90 to a party as the sound system, with my turntables and mixer plugged into it. It wa great at first but as everyone became drunker they kept turning it up louder and louder... It handled it for a while but by the end of the night it sounded a bit soggy and muddy. I turned the bass down at the mixer to stop everyone ruining my prize box.
Also I did the same thing with a GF-767 at a market hall where I was DJing and by the end of the night it had lost power? What causes this? I had to put the volume up to full, and I NEVER do this. Any knowledge?

The party starts tonight at 7pm. The Panny National RX-5050 will be the one doing the sounds! It has a great line in/out jack and is loud and great stereo separation! The LED power light does not pulse or dim at all when I drive the speakers 3/4 way or higher up, and by then your ears bleed! Sorry, but no Kaboom here......don't like them at all. I am not a bass favoring guy. The 1990's are over! ....and I am surely glad about that!
