Got this little unit Wednesday at Sally Ann Thrift Store for $5

Not a whopper, but a nice little unit. Quite dusty/dirty and not a peep out of it when I tested it, but moved the controls a bit and got a crackle out of it, so took the chance.

Got 'er home and tried again with a few more turns on all knobs and got some sound at about half volume which resulted in an puff of dust off the speaker, lol.

Cleaned the outside this morning and all the controls ,and sounds great , works on all bands, meter works as well as the Dial light button. and is a looker for it's size!

Some quick pics with my Sammy flip phone:

  Thats an antenna. I love these SW radios. Have a little collection of my own
Thx guys,

I shall post a pic a bit later of the Azimuth antenna scale to clarify that aspect .

Great to have as it is basically an emergency weather radio and we seem to be becoming the Oklahoma of Canada this year with tons of wild weather! Had a massive tornado on the ground for a N.A.record of around 3 hours this summer.

All of a sudden these (smaller radios) are showing up locally, only so much room tho. Get the real nice or unique ones however, :-P

Nice find and back story but does this Hitachi count as 'half a boombox'?!
Thanks M.O.M

Would one consider a JVC 550 half a boombox? NEVER ! Just kidding. :-P

As for this, just a radio, as it ain't got no BOOM, .but a handsome little devil for sure!

More of a Powder Puff Mini-Mono sound-wise, but listening to the game on it tomorrow just fro nostalgia sake!

TBH, it's a very smart little box, compact and business-like. As for that 'Squelch Control' and the round 'Tun/Batt' meter - there's more of an air of sophistication that may meet the eye in a passing glance. Ah, sweet little thing!

What did you use to clean her up?

Crank it!
For the exterior, a Melaleuca product called Tough and Tender. Eviromentally friendly and will eat most any dirt given a bit of time. I usually soak knobs in it for at least 10 mins and I have seen it clear off the most Golden of nicotine covered units with a strong mix. Oh, and a toothbrush, Q-tips and effort of course, LOL.

Controls, I use one of MG Chemicals products , 404B on this unit and also 801B with PPE most times.

As for cranking it, not this unit, got many other boxes that like to do that! It will get used tho

Looking good! You might even pick up Ira's snoring in Florida with the antenna on there. :-)
Thanks Man, and that may be highly possible if I could get the ringing of the Ex's snoring out of my head, and that's been 5 years !  :annoyed:

Used to pick up a Little Rock Ark, AM station back in the late 70's after the bar late ( on cloudy nites) on my car radio ! Was a Rock station, so not too far of a stretch!
