that recessed portion of the 5350 is to clamp the 2 halves tightly together around the cassette mech .this is to add stability to the unit . if you remove the front face of the 5350 you will see that the cassette mech is mounted to the back case if not for that recess they would have to had mounted the cassette mech on standoffs or post which would be very flimsy .

awesome box ! you truly feel like a king with this radio.

Question: is there a purpose behind the hollowed-out space in back, or is that Panasonic just making a stronger design with less flex?

Yup, I know exactly what that is for. It holds the optional drink tray. Just flip it out and it holds 2 beers.

i had a 5350 about 10 years ago, amazing sound on these but sold mine cause i never could find any parts i needed. at least yours is complete
