I was in a record store looking at some Funkadelic when I over heard a guy mention that he was getting an amp fixed by this guy in SilverSpring MD. He said that this guy specializes in repairing Boomboxes.
My ears perked up like a german shepard's! I asked if he had gotten a phone number from this Boombox repair man and he said yes.
I had been looking for someone who could do the more tricky repairs for my boxes. I had just been to a repair shop where the specialist was surly after seeing my oldschool technology. I was told things like: You cant get those parts anymore.", and "Theres no reason to hold on to that old boombox."
I dug up one of my Boxes that needed repair and drove out to SilverSpring which is only 40 minutes from my house. Thats where I met Mike.
Mike is a cool dude that used to be a Sanyo Dealer. He has had Boomboxes since the 80s and he takes one out every day.
His basement is filled with vintage electronics. In a corner was a stack of boxes filled with vintage tubes for amps. He has a rare radio that never went into production. A prototype. Boombox parts in plastic containers.
Here are some pics.

I can't remember when I've been so excited.
I have never been able to make it to a Boombox meet sadly.
But now I know what all the fuss is about.
You can look at pictures of a Vela Discolite all day, but until you actually see it in person and hold it in your hand, you're missing something.
For instance, I didn't know there were doors in the back that you could open and change the bulbs with.
After he fixed my box and we talked for an hour or two about radios,
Mike took a Conion from the flock and we went out to his neighborhood and he blasted it.
As I said goodbye and walked to my car, the music sounded like someone was having a party with a full PA system. The thing is loud.

He is not on line. He doesn't own a computer. And he also doesn't belive in sending these precious radios through the mail, so you have to visit him in person.
I will send you his number and address if you are interested.

Holy Damn. I didn't expect to scroll down and see such heavy hitters. That's a true sign right there.

Way cool man. Which radio did you take in for repair?

yes i would like to meet him and see if he can fix sum stuff for me ,silver spring md is local to me so coming to him is no problem .

Wow, that guy is cool! Around here, most techs roll their eyes when you bring in an 80's box.

I thought I recognised the pulled out guts of a 5150! I like your custom tweeter grills and control lever tips and the rear case repainted black looks great. Are those factory drivers? Anything else custom on that box?

Here's my aussie spec fully working RX-5150 with factory metal speaker grills: I had her out just today in the backyard annoying the neighbors :w00t:
