Just finished another 1 of my hell-ish DISCO-licious PIMP boxes for your viewing pleasure. Yes, that's right. I actually pimped a grail like the M70 & I am happy to announce that I quite like the result. I'll throw a video up here later so stay tuned....Enjoy :breakdance: :

A "Discolited" M70...gotta say I like the dial light, meter and door changes...

Not sure about the LED's around the body. :hmmm: Makes it look cheap, unfortuantely, like a Discolite... :-/

Hope this doesn't upset you, just how I see it. :-)

Naa no worries...You can turn the body lites off & still have the VU's cassette bay & dial lites any color you want sort of like SD's kit but more versatile.  As well, you can turn 'em back on for a sweet strobe-lite DISCO effect.

All you need is a box that has 8 or 10 D-CELL batteries(12-15v DC rating).

The reason I chose a grail like the M70 is because it is the very best example of what a boombox should be. LOUD, proud & portable with chunky buttons & controls on top, slick chrome rings, glossy grills, kick-a$$ sound, good tuner & line-in, etc. Everyone wants 1, most collectors have 1, but NONE are like this 1. I wanted to take a loud, good sounding box & create a DISCO DANCE machine that you can park on the cement & create an instant dance floor that can be heard for blocks.

At the same time, the M70 has a classy tuner & VU section & the RGB's lite it up like christmas so you can turn the body lites off & set the dial to your favourite colour or have it fade throught he endless coulours, for a real classy effect & look. With the blue fade on the grills, it pops nicely!

For me, this kicks the SH!+ out of any DISCO-LITE i've ever seen, just sayin' & it's a LOUD AS FACK M70 so...

For OldSkool69: The lites on the body are turned off & only the tuner, VU's & cassette are lit..
!!!WARNING!!! Turn the volume of the video, or your computer speakers down before playing!!! LOUD!!

For Jorge: A comlete run through of all options..
!!!WARNING!!! Turn the volume of the video &/or your computer speakers down before playing!!!

Fantastic mod and I do love a bit of disco!...the effect is really cool...the only thing is that, personally, I don't think I could've done it to an M70 as its more of a classy looking box imo, but thats just my opinion. But as a disco mod its really very impressive  :-D Top job

Thanx Northerner. :-D

I had a feeling it would be a mixed reaction to modding a grail like the M70 but hey, I never was one for following the crowd or playing it safe. That's too boring for me & just staring at a box with no lites is really boring. Besides, as I said, you can turn the body lites off & keep the tuner/VU/cassette lites on if you want a classy look or use them for a dance party so I can't see the downside to this mod, really. Also, I have 1 more trick up my sleeve to bling it up a notch so stay tuned, it isn't quite over yet.

M70's are pretty common among collectors & I wanted 1 that stands out & kicks a Disco-Lite in the BAULL$ & this 1, like my GF & Jorge's 8989, defintely kicks the living SHI+ out of every disco-lite I've ever seen & makes them look cheesy & mediocre in comparison. Sorry, but it's true, & I know it...In fact, I've yet to see ANY LED mod that even comes CLOSE to mine in function & looks. Nope, not even close...

I do love your Waffle Grill LED Mod tho & may just do something like it to my M80 but of course it would be an RGB kit, like this 1 & have the same remote functionality & music modes. :-D :-D

Nothing wrong with doing you're own thing mate, that's what makes life interesting :-D

It's not that the M70 is a 'grail' it's just it's classy looks that would stop me blinging mine up...it's not a criticism of yours as its your box to with what you please and it's an awesome mod...got the combination of fantastic sound and now a fab light show  My disco'ed D8444 has cool lights and personally i reckon more suits the mod but of course it sounds fairly crappy

More power to you mate and keep up the good work :-D

Yeah, your D8444 is pretty sweet & your waffle grill leds too which I may use that idea for my M80 since it really is a pretty sweet box with a digital tuner but kind of boring & ugly to look at as a boombox.

I really am geeked over how the M70 turned out, as you can tell & it doesn't look cheap at all to me, in person. I just wish you guys could see the intensity of these leds for real. It just sizzles the retinas. The colors are very rich, vivid & the strobe to music effect is much faster than my crappy camera can record & looks like flashing lites on a cop car. That's how brite & fast they are, really. No joke. I'm extemely geeked but hey, like you said some folks just don't go for that kind of thing & that's cool too if you want to keep your box minty & original.

As for too classsy to mod in that way, I believe it looks even better & you can turn the body lites off & have a LED mod like SD's only sicker, brighter & more versatile. Actually, modding the dial, VU & cassette bay was the easy part. So , WIN/WIN!! It's alot of work tho & takes lots of patience & planning, unlike SD's pop-in solution but I still have the original dial lite too & it still works.

Cheers, everybody & thanks for your input. I really appreciate the different viewpoints & do not take offense in any way whatsoever. :-D :-D

Cpl-Chronic, this is another good modification!!! Your JVC, look different and cool now!!!
I still waiting for more info about knob for potentiometer, near to phones jack...
Maybe it's a litttle modification... :-) Whats this???? :hmmm:

Here is short video of my ex JVC:
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/8986585/jvc_rc_m70w_with_l_e_d/

That looks pretty sweet. If you want to have a backlit effect on the dial try putting a LED where the BULB for the old light was. It works awesome & that is what I did to get my RGB backlit effect. It's pretty simple to do too.

I like it. A lot. Are the light circuits homemade or a kit?

Thanx Hemi, :-D

To answer your question, it's a bit of both. The kit you can buy on eBay & comes with 1 16-ft RGB strip that is pre-fabbed with resistors so no fiddling with balancing the LEDs etc. but you have to custom cut & solder wires to each strip you cut. I use 4-pin computer fan extension cables for quick dis-connects which works well & allows the blaster to be dismantled if necessary. The really hard part is drilling the hoes & epoxying the strips in place & keeping them from shifting while the epoxy sets. I literally have to hold them in place for about 10 minutes while my hand goes numb & then go back & repostion them a number of times while the epoxy hardens. I also had to remove the sensitivity POT & Remote eye from the circuit board & solder wires to the board & connect them together while moviung the eye behind the tuner glass & the pot to the input panel of the boombox. It's tedious & delicate work but not beyond the skills of most hbbbyists here who can use a soldering iron & is familiar with restoring boxes.

It does take alot of work & planning & every one of my mods is a work of art & a labour of love but man, the results are very rewarding if you have enough patience to pull it off.

Cheers :breakdance:

Love it! And the remote control is amazing. I want to see more grails pimped out!

Thanx Kraftmatic, :-D

My next project is gonna be my M80. It's a perfect candidate as they are great boxes but very boring with waffle grills so I think Northerner's WAFFLE GRILL LED mod will be the inspiration for the next RGB monster. :afro:
