This is an aka of the Silver ST888 & the Reader's Digest RDA-112. I bought it from my vintage guru down the street who has a whole shop of vintage hi-fi & we trade & deal in boomboxes, from time to time. It is in amazingly good shape & was never cracked open unitl I got it of course & hated the speakers in it.

I've had it for a day & already put some Davinci chromed out 4.5" woofers(8-Ohm) & adapted a gasket seal for the mounting of them inside the Prosonic cabinet. I swapped the original Mid/tweeter drivers to the bottom locations & kept them for my final build because the mid/highs from these 4.5" paper cones is really crisp & musical. As you can see in the photos, I could fit the large magnet Davinci's up top where they would fit without any modification to the cabinet or chassis & swapping the mids down low was the best option...The new Davinci(s) are very similar to the woofers found in the Realistic Minimus 7 series bookshelf speakers & I thought they'd go well with the original Mid/High speakers.

Here's 2 comparison videos to show the difference in clarity, depth, bass response & stereo imaging. Replacing the old stiff woofers with some efficient, easy to push drivers made a world of difference in almost every way...

Here's some pics before installing new woofers & a couple of after shots....more to come...

Very good condition...not restored....in its natural state the cassette needs service & the needles have limited response to signals so not exactly perfect but the radio & Line In work well, no issues. All knobs & switches appear to work & have that smooth, precision feel. The Normal & pull-out/slow tuning works flawlessly & the needle is showing the stations correctly...now to change those awful woofers & keep the amazing Mid-High speakers. The Mid/Tweeter drivers are absolutely amazing & sound very good to my ears & only need a good low-mid/bass woofer which would work well with a good long throw 4.5" midbass woofer.

11 bands, in case you want to get news from the world or rock out some Santana...

The case is clean, undamaged except a minor blemish, here & there, called 'Patina'. lol!

The case badge, of course...from Canada.

The upper Mid-Tweeter driver is in fact a 4.5" dia. light, paper cone driver with a small coil about 1/2" in diameter, judging from the chrome dust cap. It has a very good mid-high end sound that is hard to beat, even with dome tweeters...no, for real...but the bottom bass woofers suck donkey ears for cheeseburgers...They have to go, so enter the Davinci, Chrome woofers, 4.5", soft polymer surround, 8 OHMS & decent bass extension for small 2-way bookshelf speakers & similar applications. They are very close in sound & character as the old RadioShack/Realistic MINIMUS 7 woofers.

Here's a shot of the inside of this beast from Prosonic. The Mid/High speakers in the picture below are the 2 sealed metal speakers at the top of the enclosure. I swapped their locations to the bottom 2 spots & loaded the new Davinci Chromes into the 2 upper spots, in effect reversing their placement in the chassis...

Here, you can see the new woofer installed & how close the huge magnet comes to hitting the circuit board on the left. Also, the cabinet would not fit back together fully if the new woofers were in the bottom locations because the rear body & amp stage both interfere with the larger magnets of the new drivers. swapping their position solved all of these issues & no modifications to the chassis or cabinet are required...

Some more pics of the new woofers installed. I like the new look, having the woofers up top & the Mid/Tweeter drivers down below. It has that mean, down to business look with the chromed woofers...

Another track to show how well this little beast fills the room with sound. I move the camera around to give you a sense of how well the sound carries....

Enjoy:

Thanx guys!! I'm pretty happy with the way this one turned out. The music is from a group/DJ producer, called Gramatik.

Ah man that's sweet. I've got the Silver st888. No where near that clean but still rather good. I actually need 1 of the high/mid speakers due to 1 not making sound. Hadn't thought of changing the bottom 2, interesting

Thanx! Yeah, the hig/mids are really good but the woofers were very stiff, muddy sounding. They really hold it back.

Actually it needs lights. The stock one is dull and yellow. I would try white or green.

By the way, if you have dimensions on those DiVinci woofers I might be interested for another project. You say they are 4.5", is that the cone diameter or the basket diameter? And how about across the screw holes, what's that dimension? And what is the depth? Thanks in advance.

Nice.....do not spoil this with bloody lights lol
Kind of a jerky thing to say...

You SUCK!!!
i was kind of joking....calm down son...do as you wish it's you're box

I don't see this type of negativity on other people's threads so when you insult my creativity & hard work, I will call you on it.

That wasn't a joke. It was an insult, plain & simple & you know it so stop the waffling as if I don't know any better. I've been jabbed over & over again for my mods & quite frankly it shows immaturity & a lack of community spirit. There's lots of mods & restorations that quite frankly I did not really like at all but I don't insult someone after they worked so hard to do something different. I also know very well, these types of comments are a form of bullying to try to get me to give up & not participate in this forum because I put certain people in their place for refusing to accept they were wrong on certain theories. They were convinced they had superior knowledge & didn't like to be proved wrong. Even though I was polite & stuck to the issue, some tried to make it personal & couldn't put their egos in check & discuss the topic intelligently & without malice. Other members outright stole my ideas, tried to pawn their work off as original & refused to give me credit for inspiring their work, etc. Yet others tried to make money off me, as if they had something to contribute when really, they were just trying to use me as if I'm that naive. It gets tiring when I seem to be the only target for this jerky, stupid behavior so yeah, I don't let that crap slide...

Now, let me reassure you traditional collectors who cringe at the thought of me drilling holes into boomboxes. The type of boxes I do that too are so plentiful on eBay & other sources, that any one week I can find at least one for sale. I do NOT DISCO up unicorns that are truly rare & never have. M70's & M90's & 777s are very common & quite frankly boring to collect, even though they are amazing grails in their own right. How many members here have more than one M90, M70 or 777Z etc? So, I like to create something different, eye catching, bold & controversial. I do these mods because they are difficult & challenging & rewarding to me. I've also done a number of stealth RGB mods that leave the boombox original when the LEDS are off but still light up the tuner dial, VU's & Cassette bays etc.

Good day to you,
Cpl

I acutally thought about a stealth RGB mod where you don't see the LEDs until they're lit up, including the tuner window....

The woofers are 4.5" mounting hole pattern, diagonal but I did have to use deadmat around the edges because the squarish basket edge had gaps around the sides. I still have some internal cabinet tweaking to do to improve bottom end response. So far, midbass is warm but kickdrums sound a bit weak because the cabinet is so huge compared to the woofer sizes...

The depth of the woofers I did not measure but the magnets on these 4.5's are rather huge. If you use modern large magnet drivers, you will have to swap locations, top to bottom with the original Mid/Highs since the cord compartment & amp board would interfere with the woofers when mounted in the bottom corners...

Reno let him do what he wants with his box brother , let him without sin be the first to cast a stone lol.
We all at some point want more from our boxes and I think some boxes could use a good pimpin'. Fuk it I cut and splice shlt that has no business working at all lol.

Cool thanks, I have them in mind for a different box (a 3-piece). I love the chrome cones. Too bad they're 8 ohm though. Most vintage boxes can handle 4 ohm.
