clean em with a damp cloth johnny not over saturated though, m90 speakers are splash proof so it won't do them any harm

but honestly they look good enough to me bro

with Rimmer but it would help just one coat of the Medium Blue trust me it will make the Blue pop some more, check out the picture of me raising the volume on mine it's on Eric's thread called: "Looking for Hi Res picture of M90".

It's the 1st. and 3rd. pic. on Ahardbody's post and the 3rd on Hemiguy 2006 post. Mine was painted about two yrs. ago and she still has that luster.

When I bought my first one back in 1983 I remember the speakers being Navy blue it's due to the grilled which makes it look darker than what it is. Now some members have mentioned there have been others manufactured with black woofers, but mine was a dark blue in 1983.

You decide which looks best do like Rimmer said clean them and place them back behind the grill and take the box outside and you be the judge. Who knows they might still look good behind the grill. Then you won't have to spray paint them.

My second M90 did needed to be sprayed because they were alot more faded than yours, mines were gray. :annoyed:

ME THINKS....

(1) M90 speaker cones (paper) are bright blue from the backside unless stained.
(2) M90 speaker cones are polyurethane laminated on the front side (says as much in service manual)
(3) The polyurethane laminate used in ALL M90 speakers is a light GREY color
(4) When outside of the boombox, they will appear light bluish/greyish due to color of the paper cones bleeding through the thin polyurethane coating.
(5) Behind the grill, they will look greyish unless backlit.
(6) That Johnny's speakers look FINE as they are, and NO fiddling with them is necessary except a light cleaning. That's how many look and lots of people like a little bit of blue showing. But I have 4 including a new brand spanking new one and behind the grill, they ALL look dark grey.
(7) Painting the speaker cones will add additional mass that will could change the acoustical reproduction of the speakers and their efficiency from original. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing. I'm just saying that this is the conclusion of many audiophile enthusiasts.

My 2cents. AND if you disagree -- then it's OK.............. to be wrong.

I can't imagine why JVC would have used blue woofers only to cover them with a slightly opaque polyurethane covering. It seems to me that the poly coating is clear and that the blue has indeed faded over the past 25 years. If you look at the difference between Eric's original woofer and Johnny's woofer, it does appear that Johnny's M90 woofer has faded, either from sunlight or heat and humidity.

We're up to $.04 now.

I think the great majority are faded, like anything some more than others over time. Super may be on the right track with the clear coat, like anything, it is probably not totally clear and maybe over time and the right conditions it fades the speakers......because the back sides are always blue...........Johnny your woofs are good. When placed behind the grills, unless lit up with light you probably could not tell. And Super is right about changing the accustics and mass of the speaker if you paint it, but I think this paint is very light and flexible(for fabric and vinyle) and I used a very very light coating so I would have to do a side by side comparison hearing wise to let you know. I use that m90 woof as my avitar because it looks brand new. When I went to clean it, there was not even dust on it and the VU meters were still really red, that is another thing to look for.. Alot of them are faded as well. I think we are up to.05 cents now.

I appreciate your feedback and I will take ALL into consideration in restoring this unit, it has been setting for twenty years with no use from original user and I had to clean everything with deoxit and lubricant - all is working right now with no static, did have a power board issue, but will have Norm (SuperDuper) work his genius on that

I love this radio and if I found another one in decent shape.

On the acoustic side there have been no change at all. My M90 to this day sounds just like any other M90 including my original that I once owned.

For the past three years on theSunshine meets the members have heard mine and they will say the same.

The fabric spray is so light that it really does not change or alters the woofers performance. I learn of this method by a member Nelson aka: Nelsongf9696 on S2G although here I believe he has another name. He also had used the product on his RC-M50 and never had a problem.

JVC calls the cones "laminated" and not "painted." Wonder what it means to be "laminated?"

Super I'm not here to debate with you. I thought the same thing when I was advised of this method but I can say that this method does not hurt the woofers at all.

I gave an advice but it's up to the member if he so decides to do it or not.

I took the chance and it worked. You have your opinion which is fine Laminate and Painted are two different products but on this case the fabric spray works and I'am proof that it works.

the m90 needs to have some life and thrills to its over-subtle looks |-) |-)

even the little fatdog deck sticker makes it look so much better..

but still looks much better than the dull OEM blue/grey/tan boring woofs

maybe a light tan or ivory ???
or even a green tint ...
