I snagged this little gem off of ePay & sure enough the deck doesn't work despite the video showing it working. The listing stated it as fully working, including tape functions mentioned specifically as ALL OK. Jeesh!! These Asian sellers seem to mis-represent their items consistently but if you stick to your guns & are diligent in your documentation of any issues, video, etc. you can usually get a large part of the purchase price refunded, while keeping the radio.....

Anyways, what do you guys think of this little guy?

 Beautifully clear mids, enough - but not suffocating amounts of - bass, crystal clear hi-hat strikes and Aiwa build quality, you got a good one there!

I MUST get myself a better recording device than my phone cam 'cos every box vid I post sounds terrible even though the boxes all work well and sound good.

BTW, if you end up diving into that deck, could you do a thread on it with pictures. Mine needs belts and it looked like a @#$%
Hey, waaaaazzzzauuuuppP!!!

Uh, I took the back off of the AIWA & manually bumped the flywheel a couple of times & powered it up. BAM!!!! She fired right up & is playing strong so far. I bet it was fixed weeks ago & sat too long in one position & needed a spin, like the old Model T fords needed a crank to get started, sometimes these old girls just need a nudge to get going.....
Lucky Day!!!

I'll try to have pics of the deck inside to show you the layout. Maybe that will help. My 990 is a bit tricky but I was able to re-fit the flywheel belt without the manual or much hassle. Now I have to figure out why the bottom carriage motor isn't engaging the heads & pinch roller.

Take photos. lots of different angles & make sure you get clear shots or your F'd.....

I was listening to how clear the Mid-bass, mids & highs were & my jaw just drops to the floor. I'm sorry if I offend anyone here but this radio is a heavy contender in my book, rivaling even the greats like JVC, SHARP, TOSHIBA, etc. The timber in John Lee's voice, the razor clarity of the guitar riffs, harmonica, is pretty damn pleasing to the ear. I think the placement of the tweeters at the farthest edges of the cabinet, vastly improves imaging & stereo separation. I also hear a lower KHz Corssover point for the tweeters than the JVC & SHARPs out there. I bet the crossover is at about 3-4Khz, no? I'll have to look later at the caps to see but if anyone knows for sure, feel free to chime out...

Well, I was trying out the cassette & I think running the 100v 820 on strong 120v AC might not be the best idea.....I think the motor starts off fast & slows down after about 15 seconds of use, possibly from heat. My boombox guru down the street says you can play them all day long on 120v so I hope it's a belt issue & lube so it can get back to blasting on both reels....

Pics coming soon...

That's cool you got the deck working, that should save some time. I will get to mine, but I am still working up to it.

The first time I played mine I was shocked on the bass and power. I have the same Japanese model, 100v. I have just used it on batteries. But have many radio's I have used for years that are 100v plugged into 120v.

CRAP, I just jinxed myself :-O
