you know it really is amazing. how the ipod rules the way modern music media is delivered.
i mean dont get me wrong it is cool to be able to carry ten thousand or more songs in the palm of your hand.
but.....
every single person i know who has invested in a ipod has seen it fail in some way or another in the course of two maybe three years of its purchase. everything from batteries going down to screens malfunctioning to the selector wheel failing.
while i am sure there is many people who have no problems with them so many people i know do.

when i listen to my ipod vs using my sony psp to listen to portable mp3s the sound quality is just so different. the little psp gets satellite radio too which is a plus and i can use it as a voip phone as well. i dont get it why is there such a huge ammount of difference.
when i drag out the usb mini disc player i have again the sound quality is way better than my ipod.
yes a mini disc cannot hold as many songs but it can hold a pretty good amount. i dont have to worry about pluggin it in to recharge it if the battery goes dead and i am out and about i can just grab a battery from the store.

the lack of time to value for the ipod really annoys the hell out of me. i mean you are buying something that is pretty much made to last a very short time and then be thrown aways.
hey one could argue everything is like that..
i mean maybe it is now i dont know. i do know that i am very happy that i only have ipods i got for free.
yes i confess i do have a couple of them.
one old nano and one new shuffle with no screen or anything.
i am going to load the shuffle up and attach it to one of the boomboxes with a tiny bit of velcro tape.
yes i know its contraditory to my beliefs.
i think tho apple really needs to do something with the ipod in order to make it a real quality product.

first off they need to give us a battery access door and sell us replacement batteries we can instal ourselves with out any hassle.
next the dacs in them have to be improved. even if it makes them ore expensive there just has to be a more money spent on higher quality ones.
eigth inch mini jacks are fine for headphones, but more and more people are using there ipods with there old stereos and apple should find a way to put a better interface for connecting them than a unbalanced eighth inch output.
i would pay money for a ipod preamp thingy if it went from the data port direct to it.
i hate using a mini jack.
i mean yeah a monster cable might add a little bit more to the signal but....

why not just buy a audiophile grade cd player or stick with vinyl.
sure those are great but.
there is so many bands now who are never going to release a cd and are never going to put anything out on vinyl.
there is still some bands putting out extremely well recorded releases and i dont think that the ipod can due them justice in many cases.
yes i know you can spend time reworking your mp3s and aiff files and wav files to make them sound better but again.
once you are at that little eighth inch mini jack with crappy dac behind it forget it.

i dont think most people care about good quality recordings any more. i mean being hearing impaired why should i care but it makes a real difference to me.
i mean i think alot of the under 25 crowd have never heard a great sounding stereo.
weather it be a cool sounding old blaster or a nose in the air snobbery system.
sad really.
ok so ipods do sound really good in comparisson to some other things.
i mean a good quality mp3 cant sound really great.
but i mean there is so much more that they could be doing.
i would like to see someone put out a truly great mp3 player.
even if it was a excellent stand alone unit that you plugged into the wall with dedicated good quality rca jacks.
anything moving towards that i think would be a fine idea.

bill -- i dont have an ipod --
my wife has a few --and all 3 of my kids enjoy them --

their latest models are only about 1 1/2 inches square and just 3/16" thick -

----
true about the ' not caring about recording quality'
but --these things sure do keep their interest in portable music going
and growing --
so , to me ---
"its all good"

sort of :-) :-D ;-)

my new shuffle is about the same size as the top two digits on my index finger.
so tiny.
i mean putting it on one of the boomboxes is so easy and you dont even really notice its there.

for real, and i do mean it because i have mp3 players ( thats old school !!! )

but i prefered walkman, not even cd man was so fun.

do know why but tapes had some special feeling to it,

hmmm

dont know why though.

not only the sound.

its a matter of taste.

but sure was fun since a kid, using walkmans in school,

and playing some tunes on it ( it had a speaker on the side )

ahahah. i dont know , but the thing about ipods is because i think theyre kinda cold,

i have always been afraid of environments like ' 2001 - space odissey '

( one of my all time faves btw )

so, analog forever.

( or at least till i get fed up )

:-)

and by the way i get lost with these new gadgets having all these funcuitons,

loads of features, i dont even use 10% of it,

the gold old days were:

PLAY, STOP, and VOLUME...

ahhhh, thats about it.

The music industry should bump up the standard level of compression for mp3's.
I think it's 128kbs right. 192kbs would be good. 320 would be best. So what if it takes up space. It's going to sound fantastic, isn't that whats it's all about, how the music sounds? :hmmm:

I think this pic is relevant for this thread.

i alwayus buy my music either its vinyl or mp3,

and on mp3,

the minimum of the travks i buy is 192kbps,

its not bad sounding.

almost good as cd.

128 kbps is sometimes noticeable , i mean some weird sound effect.

of course 320 k's is very decent.

but of course, id like to own a big cd collection, but at least i have a big vinyl collection and also a cool mp3 colection.

got some cds now i think of it.

master z, in case you read this,

take a listen to some portugues rap, ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxnPye35cKk )

i think youll like, we got good rappers here.

( i know many of them )

:agree: Master Z I only rip at 192kb or above unless there is some odd reason to do 128kb.

320 does sound better no doubt.
but if you are still piping that sound through a eighth inch jack that sound is being squelched right out of the gate.

i mean yes the size limitations are a real consideration but a ipod does not need to be the size of a book of matches.

Try telling that to all the kids who drool over the next version of the Ipod because it's even smaller than before. Won't be long and the Ipod won't be any bigger than the size of an Almond.
