Don't overdo it in the bass department Adam .
I did one day and i blew an amp chip.
I"m happy that you write about the sound comparison between a PH 492 and the PH 480
I don't own a PH 492 but i do own 3 PH 490 's .I guess the sound of a PH 490 and a PH 492 are the same
I do like the sound of the 480 way more. Way punchier bass even with super bass off
I don't know if you connected a headphone to a PH 480 before. Got to try that
I listen to the 480 sometimes with Senheisser HD520 II headphones .Just awesome
I don't get that soundquality when i connect the HD 520 II to the M90
Enjoy your 480 now Adam I know you will
:-O Thanks for the safety tip. Was it hard to replace/repair?
It was not so hard to replace it but it is hard to get hold of the chip itself
I had to buy another PH 480 for parts that had one busted chip so i soldered the good one out to repair the other PH 480
The amp chip of a PH 480 and a PH 490/492 are not the same as you may know

Btw, Eddy, I have some spare PH490 parts if You ever need some. ;-)

What parts do you have Adam?
I'll PM them to You ;-)
Thanks Adam
The PH 490 under my PH 480 is the last one i got. The one that was supposed non functional but works for 90 %
It looks way to sweet to part out hmm

That model's gorgeous! Definitely better looking than the PH-490/492 because their speaker enclosures are a different colour to the centre piece, it makes them look more like home stereos than boomboxes, in my opinion. Great to hear the 480 has more bass too! :stereo: :breakdance:

My advice , get one if you can .Forget about the PH 490 or 492
I listened to my 480 a few days in a row now (the whole day) with a sony discman connected to it
Sound from that CD player is heavenly . Y'all should try that . No MP 3 player , just a CD player
What i played , dire straits , reckless from bryan adams , U2 unforgettable fire , a pop classics compilation...........................

There's a lot of difference between the US version and the Euro version. First time i noticed that thanks to Adams pics
The US version has other lettering on the speakers and it does not have the HiFi component lettering on top
Pics from the Euro version

A picture of the 480 label. 80 Watts power consumption :grim: Must be a misprint ?

first time poster...just thought id throw this out there regarding the big 'fisher ph480'... bought mine at the local thrift store in filthy condition for ten bucks :-D , brought it home and plugged her in. after a few listening sessions, was impressed with the mid and top end, as well as the volume, but was rather dissapointed in the bass- for two 8' woofers? sure enough, after performing the left right balance trick, bass from either left or right was punchier from only one channel, rather than from both  ... snipped a speaker and rewired neg to pos and boom  lots of thump thump thump.?
looks like factory wired out of phase. much better sound and imaging, as well as volume..... any others out there?...better check :w00t:

I may be getting my hands on a 492
That's actually a 490 with swapped in 8" woofers that have chrome dust caps. This would be Boogie's Fisher right? I remember his post about wanting chrome capped woofers swapped into his. The 492 has silver grills and blue trim rings around the woofer grills.

The reason the 480 sounds better is mostly because it has the far superior BASS & TREBLE/ Loudness combination of tone controls which always sound nicer than 5 band EQ's which is on the 490/492's. I never liked the EQ's as much as the old fashioned BASS, TREBLE LOUDNESS of older equipment. My favourite receivers were the Yamaha Natural sound series with loudness controls instead of just having an ON/OFF loudness button.
