Hey MOD freaks, :-D

I bought another beautiful SONY CFS-88S from Miguel1Love of eBay fame, A.K.A. Lopez of BBy & it arrived in great shape with plenty of bubble wrap & strong cardboard box, etc. The deck needs work & I had to adjust the sensitivity/selectivity a bit for clearer FM reception & cleaned up the front panel.

Now, any collector who has had 1 of these knows that it is an impressive beast sporting 8" woofers crammed inside of 2 small cabinets, measuring roughly 9-1/2" x 9" x 4-1/2". This isn' a lot of room for bone crushing BASS but the speakers sound good, especially for Jazz & Classical music.

So, I decided to try my luck at some woofer replacements & upgraded caps for the tweeters. Oddly, the caps are 2.2uF(18000Hz roll-off) but since the tweeters are very strong in the mid & upper midrange, they actually sound very balanced at that crossover point.

Unfortunately, I have to order some poly/metal film caps before I can replace the cheap, harsh sounding electrolytics but I did manage to shoe-horn in some massive 8" GRS woofers in there from Parts Express. I had to do some modifications to the interior of the cabinets & file down the posts to fit the new woofers in properly but they just barely fit in there.

Take a look:

Part of the modification required a hole in the rear of the cabinet to properly port the vented pole piece of the woofers but it came out pretty clean looking

I'll post a couple of vids later tonight of the blaster in action playing a variety of music types. So far I'm happy with this first attempt but of course, I will be refining the sound with better crossover caps & maybe a bit of padding to see if that improves things further....

Thanx for looking,

I also have an 88S in mint condition but got the same issue. No bass at all.... kind of flat sound. I am interested in improving the sound quality. :-D

Nice work Cpl, I had been eyeballin that radio for a while on Ebay, I love how wide that sucker is. I'm glad it went to you though, you will do way more to it than I could have in order to make it Thump. Can't wait for the vids!

Good upgrade!!

It's like Sony did everything they could to elimate any chance of bass by ignoring every basic rule of speaker cabinet design.
Big speaker in a small, shallow cabinet equals very little bass.

I'm always amazed how much manufacturers compromise performance to cater for the demands of style!

Yeah, me too but I think this radio was marketed to the professors & intellectuals who want a good, classy JAZZ/Classical radio for their bookshelf, not a street warrior box for sure.

The ironic part is if you plug in a good set of Senhieser headphones with accurate BASS response, it sound AMAZING!!! Lots of deep, deep bass & great clarity, even on FM....

Vids coming soon....

Ok, here it is. This video is shot with the input FLAT(+/-0db), no boost or cut on the input signal. On the 88S, both Bass & Treble are at +8 If you listen to the demo on a good set of speakers, you may be able to tell the Bass is warmer & more natural sounding than the original woofers but the tweeters are a bit too efficient as they are 4 OHM drivers & the 2.2uF caps are electrolytic, which gives the treble a more brassy sharp sound. Next, I will try to find a more modern, 8 OHM tweeter to match the 8 OHM woofers so that the sound is more flat across the spectrum.

Also, as VintageMan can attest, the room I am using to demo this vid is absolutely terrible for bass response since it is only a 9x8 foot room with plaster walls so it's miracle that this blaster sounds tihis good at all in that room....

BY advertising it in the local edition of Ad Mag, no eBay back then and I'd only bought the thing for a few of its parts but found that it was far too good to be a breaker.

Sounds good man, thanks for the vid, is there an LED mod in store for the future?
Thanx guys for the kind feedback.....Yes! SLO, there will be a modest RGB mod like the last one & I already have a line on some 6 OHM DOME tweeters with waveguide that will fit nicely behind the tweeter fins & give a more flat response & blend with the woofers nicely. The tweeters are neodymium & only 5/8" deep so they will fit behind the fins, no problem at all....

Will update when I have the tweeters finished. I also want to add some custom accents to the speakers so that they also look unique from the rest of the 88's out there....

Stay tuned....

I remember my uncle had one of these Sonys back in the eighties. It always sat behind the bar on a shelf. I clearly remember my Hi Fi mad father insulting my uncle telling him his newly acquired stereo sounded like a tin can!

He is very honest, my father!

They live in a unit now but they've still got the 88 sitting behind their new bar!

James.... :-)

Thanx systemaddict! :-D

It's getting there but not quite done yet. In the meantime, a couple more vids with some blues & eclectic tracks for comparison:

So far as I can tell, there are 3 issues in the sound that I can hear.

1. The stock tweeters are too strong in the 2-4Khz range @ 4 ohms which should be improved with the tweeters I ordered from parts express.

2. Because SONY tried to compensate for the harsh tweeters, they pegged the crossover point at 18Khz(2.2uF) causing a gap in the range between woofer & tweeters. It is more noticeable with male voices & the upper bass guitar range.

3. The electrolutics are a bit harsh & poly-film caps would sound a lot smoother & more detailed

Anyways, let me know what you guys think about these points if you have any insights to share.

Thanx for watching & stay tuned....

Ok, I did a couple of things to further improve the sound & started a resto thread about it but figured I should update this thread with the new tweeters installed & post a vid of it pounding out some heavy trance & it sounds BADASS!!

Enjoy & let me know what you think of the sound. It's way better in person but the vid does a good job of capturing the balance, power & clean bass coming from those 8" cans & dome tweeters....
