Hey MOD freaks,
I bought another beautiful SONY CFS-88S from Miguel1Love of eBay fame, A.K.A. Lopez of BBy & it arrived in great shape with plenty of bubble wrap & strong cardboard box, etc. The deck needs work & I had to adjust the sensitivity/selectivity a bit for clearer FM reception & cleaned up the front panel.
Now, any collector who has had 1 of these knows that it is an impressive beast sporting 8" woofers crammed inside of 2 small cabinets, measuring roughly 9-1/2" x 9" x 4-1/2". This isn' a lot of room for bone crushing BASS but the speakers sound good, especially for Jazz & Classical music.
So, I decided to try my luck at some woofer replacements & upgraded caps for the tweeters. Oddly, the caps are 2.2uF(18000Hz roll-off) but since the tweeters are very strong in the mid & upper midrange, they actually sound very balanced at that crossover point.
Unfortunately, I have to order some poly/metal film caps before I can replace the cheap, harsh sounding electrolytics but I did manage to shoe-horn in some massive 8" GRS woofers in there from Parts Express. I had to do some modifications to the interior of the cabinets & file down the posts to fit the new woofers in properly but they just barely fit in there.
Take a look:
Part of the modification required a hole in the rear of the cabinet to properly port the vented pole piece of the woofers but it came out pretty clean looking
I'll post a couple of vids later tonight of the blaster in action playing a variety of music types. So far I'm happy with this first attempt but of course, I will be refining the sound with better crossover caps & maybe a bit of padding to see if that improves things further....
Thanx for looking,
Cpl

Then modify it!
