Hey techno junkies, is there a way to modify or is it even possible to modify the sound of an existing boombox.....basically adding more bass to it? :hmmm: Does it have to do with the amplifier, speakers...etc. Thanks.

I would say make sure the controls are clean first, and you could consider adding some insulation along the back panel to amplify the bass.

i think you dont want to use a amp and use the box only.
best option Change the speakers.
Go for free edge speaker to get more bass.(they move a lot)
or You can also go for a little bigger magnet for better fidelity.
Most boombox have enough power to play bigger speakers than provided.
Even a pocket radio like Pansonic RF-P50 can play 6 inch speaker. i used to do it ,belive me.
Most boomboxes are fitted with low wattage speakers just to make it loud( actually its just distortion).
A speaker need support from the cabinet to manage the bass.
Dont know if the box(cabinet) you are talking about is supporting the speakers or not when you compare it with a 3 piecer which has seperate boxes for the speaker. Sometimes a boombox cabinet doesnt do full justice to the inbuilt speakers. You can experiment by removing them and playing in a different speaker box(wood preferably).
so here are your options.
 • If the box (cabinet) makes the best use of the speakers go for better speaker that fit there or refoam the existing with free edge ones.
 • Go for car speakers they are the best you can even use old ones
 • attach external speakers on the box like from a mini sytem. ((works best)) or make your own. Dont go for heavy stuff.

caution: but please follow the limits of your boombox. Dont go for speakers that are too heavy for the system or you will fry it. also the supported ohms of the box is important while choosing the speaker or you wont get loud sound at all.
Experiment. You will be surprised for sure.

If you are not carrying around the box outside your home, try simply connecting the box to any good speakers. The sound output will be amazing.

Most well made boxes have a Speaker out terminal. You need a single channel 3.5 mm pin to connect through the speaker out terminals (Say mono Headphone pin!)

I am driving my Kenwood Midi's full size 3 way speaker from boomboxes these days. The sound performance can compete with many amplifier/receivers at low volumes. What I see, is that boombox seems to run short of adequate current from the power supply at higher volumes. Have a try.

Slight modifications to speakers will not be enough to low output boxes if you want more bass.
Connecting external speakers will make lots of difference. Way back in 1979 or so I hooked up my Sony mono 2W box to an akai speaker box and was amazed by the bass it gave (at full volume) .

Simple solution: Upgrade to a Sharp GF777.
Time to add more boxes to your collection! :w00t:
Actually that is how I added 70+ boxes to my collection.

Okay adding speakers to Sharp VZ3500 which got 28Watts/channel ( it is not a boombox) will surprise you if you try a B&W, paradigm, infinity, Harman Kardon or MK speakers ....to it. I couldn't believe it when I hooked up my MK 3 way speakers to it! The quality was that of a Denon 5000 series reciever.
I still have that set up in one of my rooms.

:jawdrop: :jawdrop:

Sony I had in 79 looked like the Sharp GF6000..

if you use a speaker with a higher spl rating or efficiency the closer to 100 db or better the more efficient the speaker will use the available power ,the trade off is usually lowered power handling. but as long as you match the rms power rating of the speaker to the rms output rating of the amplifier you won't have that problem.
