** Mini DIY V6.0 project - amp upgrade completed **

Hi Guys,

Well I've been super stoked with the performance of the V5.0 box but I'm thinking a small, portable DIY box would be cool to have around.

I recently won a rediculous EBay auction where I was the only bidder - $0.01! :lol:

I ended up with a van full of old electrical goods. Two boomboxes, 3 record players, 3 in 1s, 2 complete component systems, floor speakers, a set of golf clubs, workshop light (with magnification window) etc...............

Some of the stuff ended up at the tip but there were a couple of boomers in the pile:

Now the seller wasn't completely crazy - both boomers are knackered but I did notice the cool speakers in the Akai:

The Akai speaker cabinets utilise rear firing passive radiators. As the surrounds are foam, the radiators are usually busted - in this case, the passives were completely missing!!

The 8 ohm drivers have plastic cones and cloth surrounds so they're ready for further action. They look like they can handle some power! The metal tweeters are super heavy and look like quality! :-)

The V6.0 will be running a similar rear firing passives set up but the passives will be enlarged slightly for more bass.

The DIY V6.0 will be around 30 cms long, 16cms high and 16cms deep. It will be powered by 4 x 18650 Lithium batteries powering a 15 watts RMS per channel stereo D class amp and a Sure Bluetooth 4.0 receiver.

The cabinet will be constructed of 7mm premium plywood. The amp and passive radiators should be here next week.

I've got a feeling this is going to be a cool little blaster!

Damn DIY mini boomer, this is going to be cool as hell!

This might inspire me to crack on with my build to, I have the amp and speakers etc ready to go.

Cant wait for the next installment,,,.

Thanks guys! It's great to be trying a new, smaller DIY format with modern passive radiators. I've got two types of amp for consideration:

1. 15 watts per channel D class amp with volume pot and big heat sink:

This amp will be coupled with the Sure BT4.0 receiver.

2. 25-35 watts per channel D class amp with volume control and BT track selection buttons. This amp has a built in BT receiver.

Not sure of the quality of the built in BT receiver on this one so I'll have to test it out.

I've also ordered two types of passive radiators:

I am really thinking of creating one of these myself one way or another. Are you going to use a plug in power supply or are you just using rechargeable batteries?

It will be solely Lithium ion powered.

One of the amp types I ordered has arrived. Amazingly powerful for an amp that fits in the palm of your hand:

Which model amp is that. I have been researching amps, cannot recall seeing that chipset/model. Watts, voltage input? Do you have a URL? I'm assuming that is a volume control?

While I'm still waiting for the passive radiators to turn up, I thought I'd get a start on building the cabinet for the V6.0.

To keep weight to a minimum whilst maintaining a solid structure, I went with 7mm plywood:IMG_3846.JPGIMG_3850.JPGIMG_3851.JPG

This is a very 'mini' project for me. :-) The cabinet is quite small at barely over 33 cms long so the convenience factor just went up a notch!

Well we have a winner - The INSMA amp with built-in BT 4.0 receiver has been given the nod for V6.0 duty. In truth, the amp has more power than is needed for this project. Luckily, it includes dip switches that alter the sensitivity of the amp input so I'll lower the sensitivity for these little speakers.

It will be powered by 4 x 18650 2600 maH Lithium batteries which will provide around 16 volts off the charger. This amp can handle up to 25 volts - maybe I'll use this style of amp with 2 more lithium cells for my next 'Big Boy' build. As it is, the V6.0 will actually have more RMS output than 2 M90s! :-)IMG_3879.JPGIMG_3880.JPGIMG_3881.JPG

The passives should be here next week so I'll be able to continue with the cabinet build then.

Quick update: 26.6.17.

The following parts have now arrived from my suppliers:

2 x passive radiators.
4.5 aH SLA battery.
Black on/off master switch.
3.1 amp twin USB device charging panel with fuse (power out).
Blue, 3 digital volt display.
12v DC female charging input socket.
Charging fuse and holder.
Black leather handle with chrome fittings.
Sure Bluetooth 4.0 12v receiver board.

The front panel driver and tweeter holes are now cut and sanded. The 2 internal walls are now fitted, battery retaining blocks and box corner supports glued in. The rear panel passives holes are now cut and drilled.

I've decided to switch back to the smaller amp with the single volume knob as the other amp has a very annoying turn on/off pop that makes the poor old speakers go crazy.

The smaller amp only needs 12 volts to go loud so as I mentioned above, I'll go with a compact 4.5 aH 12v SLA battery - this will allow me to use my existing automatic SLA charger I use on my other builds.

I'm hoping to get all the remaining fabrication work done and have her in paint by Sunday this weekend. :-)

BTW, since you're using passives, are you going to skip the fiber fill?

Yes, they do have spiders as per a normal speaker but were designed as passives from the get go:IMG_3948.PNGIMG_3947.PNG

There will be a single cross brace that will sit horizontally between the side panels inside each speaker 'cabinet'. It will have a strip of sound deadening attached along its length. No other fill will be required for this passives style approach. :-)
