Well I stopped by my Local overpriced Goodwill on Tuesday after Mondays big half off sale and guess what? Even at half price their electronics are overpriced so the electronics Isle was still completely full, they didn't sell anything on Monday. A $5 VCR that's priced at $20 is still overpriced at 50% or $10 so every few weeks they have to throw all of this crap away because they can't sell it.

Who ever does the pricing at this Goodwill needs to be reassigned to cleaning the bathrooms. :dunce: :weed:

I know how you feel, Don. In my area, some of the Goodwill stores have had the component CD players priced at $49.99. WTF??!! I recently picked up a Panasonic DT-680 for $15, but the regular price was $29.99. And the thing is, Goodwill gets all this shiat for FREE. Seems like the charitable organization is becoming a little greedy. :-/

:agree: I think some of the thrift stores are getting very greedy but isn't greed normal in most businesses? High levels of Greed have been a big problem for years though. I have one thrift store I won't even go to because their prices are the same or higher than what the items are selling for on ebay.

A 680 for $15 is pretty good. I've noticed the CD player prices as well and your right that they are rediculously high. A 10 year old CD player with no remote for $30 to $50 is common around here, where do they come up with these prices?

oak wears better than almost any wood -
but it has no 'memory' for the snap-in latches :nonono:
and it takes 23 coats of paint --just to hide the pronounced grain :-)

the battery cover 'wood-of-choice'
is rock maple

I would suggest making the covers out of what ever wood is available and than attaching the latches which would be made from spring steel to the wood.

AHA !!

i finally do agree with tony about some serious matter

except ---for a flush (flat) fit--
the wood can rarely be more the 3/32" thick -
so then - fastening any metal hardware --is the problem

anyway

Last time I went to Goodwill, I saw a tuner that was like $10. They had already announced a 1/2 off sale for the following day so I went back the next day. I figured @ 1/2 off ($5) I would buy it as a project, strip out the tuner board and play with it. Next day, they jacked the price up on it to $25 on this, but also on anything else they thought would be too cheap at 50% off. Well, if there is something I don't like, it's treating us light stupid buyers so I haven't been back since I made that wasted trip.

So, the people that are doing the pricing aren't ignorant after all. In fact, they are downright shrewd.

YOU (tony) are even smarter than you appear   :w00t:

dremel has those ultra-skinny saw blades -
so yes - it could be done-
but do consider this ::
slotting a 3/32" cover --minus the kerf :-)
leaves only 1/32" of 'meat' on each side of the metal -
a risky potential for a grain crack--
especially when the spring pressure is applied

still - if we used the $$ model aircraft ply -- from hobby stores-
it MIGHT work
:-) :-)

That's one way to look at it but I call it Greedy, Misleading and downright dishonest.

As a result my Local Goodwill didn't sell any electronics on sale day, yeah shrewd? Stupid if you ask me because they didn't sell anything that they got for free which means they didn't make any money. Wouldn't it be smarter to make some money and sell everything than make no money selling nothing?

prices are all over the place at thrift stores. i mean you will have a modern 5.1 reciever that sold for two hundred bucks new with a 150 dollar price tag on it. then right beside it will be a 70s reciever for 15 bucks.
honestly the reality is thrift stores have become second hand stores. they have nothing to do with providing things for inexpensive prices to the less fortunate anymore. they are now soley set up for the purpose of maximizing profits.
they have employees more and more and less volunteers. employees cost money and rent has gone up utilities as well.
also people are now not donating to places like goodwill and the sally ann as much due to the recession.
things have changed but there is still rural places i head to where the prices are as they were. still tho you can find bargains at these places. i mean it was just last week i took home a like new680 for twenty bucks.
not as often as it used to be.
honestly i am not sure if goodwill is like value village or not but up here value village only gives two percent of the profits to charity.
i dont donate anything of value to value village anymore and well i still get the odd score but i would rather deal with real thrift stores. not for profits

That's true in large part bill but I'll restate wouldn't it be better to sell everything at a low price than to sell almost nothing at higher prices even if your trying to maximize profits as you surmise? That's whats happening at my local Goodwill, they are hardly selling any of their electronics because prices are to high then when the shelves over flow every month they clear em out and throw it all away. How does this help any part of the system? They aren't making money, useable items aren't getting passed on to someone else and the land fills are filling up quicker because this stuff is heading out to the garbage.

At our trash-flea it´s the same.
Full price or shredder! :-/
Nearly impossible to dump the price.

But most prices there are quiet fair.

I work for The Dept Of Sanitation of New York and 5 days a week we have a truck that goes to the returns location of Goodwill for most of NYC and we fill up two garbage trucks with crap no one wants. Roughly 16 tons of crap a day.

Its a tissue job (senority went the slot opens) but I never see anything of real value. Maybe old video games for out dated systems and the such. NEVER boomboxes.

You guys are right that occasionally there's a good deal which keeps me going back but for the most part these thrift stores are in LaLa land when they price most of these old electronics. Some of this junk should be $1 not $90, I actually get a bit of a laugh when I see something marked so outrageously.

Goodwill, Value Village, usually the same stuff that never sells...it's there forever.

St. Vincent de Paul, lots of variety, average quality, high turnover, fairly priced. :-D
