So I have conducted a study using both these boxes for sound and loudness by my pool area.

Study finds the Lasonic is much better for sound and loudness outside... I don't understand because inside the Altec Lansing kicks A$$.

Both volumes go up to 40. The Lasonic was kept at 32 and was so loud you can hear it on our lake where as the Altec Lansing was at 40 and barely even heard it in pool room, let alone on lake :-)

Even quality of sound and Bass on Lasonic was much better. Jeannie loves the Altec Lansing but also noticed how much better the 931BT was.

Another great thing about the 931BT is controlling the music and volume from 30 feet away where as the Altec Lansing can't do this.

So for all the members against Lasonic 931 don't knock it til you try it :-)

Hmm.......Perhaps because the Altec devotes most of its power to the side-pointing subs, so the mids & highs can't be heard from great distance?

If you are comparing a docked iPhone to a headphone out Android it's a bit unfair as a comparison. Most phones make for poor audio devices.

So if your only choice is a headphone port, the audio quality will never be as good as something with a docking port?

A docking system is a line level output and is impedance and gain matched,. Using a headphone out is double amping and creating an impedance mismatch, this is why most portables (connected via headphone out) sound better at 75% volume, by dropping the level you are not "over-gaining" the input circuit and balancing the impedance somewhat.

Dock = source > line level out > preamp > amp

Headphone out = source > headphone amp > headphone out > preamp > amp

Preamp and amp are the "boombox" or other playback system, integrated or separates

If no dock is available on the playback device you can get apple 30 pin connector to line out cables, if you can extract line level out it is better to do so.

Actually the comparison is docked IPhone on Altec Lansing and Blutooth from IPhone to 931BT. The Android was plugged in via input in Altec Lansing but was not used in comparison :-)

My comment refers to yours about your iPhone sounding better than the Android, and not about your comparison between boxes. Now that you have mentioned the Bluetooth to the Lasonic vs dock on the Altec it is still an unfair comparison, both boxes should be connected to the source the same way.

When you say headphone out, you mean connecting the iPod's headphone jack to the boombox's Aux, right?

Yep the headphone jack, the only way to extract line level from a iPod/iPhone is from the 30 pin connector through a dock or compatible cable.

Well actually I have the I931 with dock and it's same as the Bluetooth 931 in sound and loudness.... I've already compared the 2!!!

so the comparison is the same with both a docked I931 and 931BT..

The new I931/931BT is much louder outdoors than the Altec Lansing ;-)

My point was that even using Bluetooth and being able to control music from 30 feet away is better on 931BT as compared to docking as well and having to change music etc...

Well the Lasonic has 8" woofers right? I think bigger speakers just project better. Even if the rated power is less.

As another example, take a Sanyo C7 or a JVC PC-whatever.........Sure, their 3-piece construction provides good "warm" bass, great for indoors......And they supposedly have lots of power (20W+ per channel)..........But their speaker cones are tiny (4"), so their angle of projection sucks, and they would suck from a great distance.

My M9998 has more power than my Crown 850.......But the Crown with its 8" woofers is better outdoors.

Just my guess. Not backed up with facts.

Cool comparison...Sure has provided a heated thread :-D

For $150 BRAND NEW Radio, how can you go wrong with the Lasonic

I have never heard the Altec Lansing, but I have head many new sound systems and I know that technology marches on and this new stuff WHOMPS our beloved 80's crap in the clean sound quality and full balanced sound quality department  But most of that new stuff are table top, in home, move from room to room, small get together usage tinker toys!

They will NEVER stand up to my 935 or M70 for delivering the goods pool side with a bunch of kids screaming and splashing off the diving board while 10 adults are partyin', drinking beers and grilling  I'm sorry....It's just NEVER GONNA HAPPEN! Now, if your talking big bucks and the 3 speaker TDK, ok, I'll bend a little there...BUT for $550 I'll get a beat to shiat C100F and still whoop it's Arse

I'll stay with what I have thank you!

Don't get me wrong, I love the Altec Lansing. I actually use this most of all of my new boxes :-)

I just think for outside the Lasonic out does the Altec Lansing :-)

For indoors I prefer the Altec Lansing!!!

Hi all,
Can anyone tell me if the new Lasonic's with blue tooth capability still dock and charge your ipod? It's funny, none of the highlights say that the unit still does this (ipod dock). It looks like it does since the door is still there, but I would like to know for sure. They had a bunch of different adaptors for all the different types of ipods that could fit inside the front of the unit.....if someone could let me know if that is still the case.

Thanks
Eric
