That's a lot of money to pay for poor sound quality

Styling and build quality are its only redeeming virtues

None of them were perfect at that period of time... but so much fun to see what we had in late seventies. That is the fun part!

$660 sounds like a very high price at this point in the game (for this particular model). Not being a boombox collector I feel confused about paying top price for vintage electronics. On the one hand, the nostalgia factor is clearly there but on the other hand, as an engineer I know full well how much technology has progressed in the last 30 years. So I start comparing old boomboxes with the new ones... and I get even more confused. Unfortunately, there is nothing out there (in terms of modern boomboxes) to compare with. Perhaps the only available model is TDK's "3 speaker boombox"

"3 speaker boombox". Who came up with this name? It's just ridiculous. And when I tried to check the specifications, I discovered that TDK did not bother to even produce those (well, there are some but not much really). It appears that life style changes have killed this form factor which is a little sad. These days we have clock radios (aka iPod docks) and mini/micro component systems - and nothing in between. Just sad.

All these opinions are true, however, it does sound good, depending on what you're playing.

the weakness of the 838 is the woofers , they are great for sound reproduction just not loud playing of it

now if it had better woofers i bet it would wake that sumbitch up . these have he nicest needle type vu meters that makes the ones on the m90 look small.

Woofers are the weakness for all major JVC 1-piece boxes... M90 woofers sound real good depending how far back away from the box you are and
you don't overdo it on the bass control. Toshiba or Lasonic 6" woofers in an 838 would sound great!

Yeah, 838 meters > M90 meters. Still, I believe if M90 meters had a white or silver background, they'd look much more remarkable.

:hi: You said it man.. It's the whole Ipod craze, why carry 30lbs of sound around with just a few tapes..when you can carry millions on songs around with a device the size of 1 cassette tape...?!
Everything is "disposable" nowadays.. from cars to electronics, if it breaks why fix it? Just throw it in the gutter, and go buy another..
This is the mentality with todays generation.. everything is built cheaper, so there is no need to fix/restore it..
Look at todays cars..poorer materials are being used on vehicles compared to older automobiles.. Back when they were built with quality, not concerned with how light & plasticky we can make it for better fuel economy!
This reflects some of the newer "boomboxes", that you can't take out in the sun because it will melt! Due to the cheap plastics it was made with..
I have no interest in "remakes"... from cars to movies & songs, or even boomboxes, the Original is always better..
I prefer the OLD SCHOOL.. Cars built with style, quality, and tons of chrome.. and a Boombox that is built like a brick..I don't even own an Ipod! (end of rant)
