Tell us it sounds as good as it looks. :hmmm:
I've only listened to the FM on battery power so far, but it's definitely an indoor box.. It doesn't have a loudness button on it, I would call it my "Classy" listening box for normal listening levels.. like background music if your playing cards or something..
You can tell its built really good and the sound is very clear! :stereo:

hell it's the first time iv'e seen pics of the back and sides of the radio lol. looks more like a tank than an elephant , or maybe a cyborg elephant tank . bad ass radio indeed.
 Good description! Yeah, maybe its the units with the round grilles that got it nicknamed the Elephant..?

So, how does it sound? :-)
I really haven't cranked it up, just a few minutes of listening at moderate volume for a few minutes here and there..
Honestly, it has a real solid sound.. not hollow or tin canny.. I've never had any Philips/Magnavox to compare it to, and most my other boxes are Jumbos...I am very satisfied, and once I get a converter I will be using it all the time!

Damn that's a dope box so beautiful, congratulations on finding your grail
Thanks! I was psyched as soon as I won the auction, and super pumped the day it showed up! I just sit here and stare at it...
It is a great feeling finding the one box you lust after for so long... :-D
I feel like building some kind of shrine around it, right now it's on a shelf sitting upon some black fur... :pimp:

Congrats James. I had my eye on that auction but I had picked up a D8703 (the version with the round grilles, which is the one your service manual is for) about a month ago so decided to let this one slide. Glad you got it.

I was just giving mine a quick cleaning today and noticed just how well it's built. Check out the knobs--when you pull them off you can see they are each made of 5 or 6 different parts, including the little flat disk on the bottom, real aluminum caps, metal tension clamps inside, etc. They would have been a lot more costly to manufacture than the simple one-piece plastic knobs on most machines. Only high-end audio gear could afford that kind of quality, so you can tell these units must have been pretty expensive back in the day.

absolutely beautiful JC, always been a big fan of the high end Philips boxes and so here I present a pic of my grail, the Philips d8614.
sound on this one is absolutely mind blowing for amid size box :-) I believe the 8614 was Philips top of the line box in 82 priced at a whopping $410. would love to do a sound compare with your beauty :-D here's mine...
