I just unpacked it, it is HUGE. Looks amazing! This is my first "big black box"
There are a couple technical issues with it.
For starters, only the right channel works. All the lights are flashing so I doubt a faulty amplifier chip.
What's more disturbing is an obnoxious hum whenever it's plugged in, even if if's turned off. Haven't opened it yet, but it comes from the general direction of the power supply.
Both decks appear to work, they play, cue, pause and eject. When I put a tape in right deck and pressed play, there was sound, but the tape got pulled inside.
Potentiometers require cleaning, they all work.
Radio works.
Haven't tested the high-speed dubbing, recording, line-in and the alarm.IMG20230623171503.jpg

Congrats, that's a cool box.
I always replace all belts whenever I buy a box.
New belts could stop the tape from being "eaten" but then again it could be a dirty or dried out/cracked tire associated with the takeup reel or a dirty or dried out/cracked pinch roller.
Basically, the decks need to be fully serviced if you want any kind of reliability.
I'd try cleaning all pots, switches and sliders and see if that gets the left channel working.
If the hum starts when you plug it in and you know a motor isn't running then it's probably the transformer.
I actually plug my boxes into a switched outlet that plugs into the wall outlet that's easily accessible to me.
Because whichever box I'm currently listening to is close to my bed, I switch the outlet off when I'm done listening so there's no hum.

if you open the box to replace the belts and clean the pots ... you can also check that the black wire is firmly attached to the tape desk ( should have a wire screwed or soldered to the metal of the deck ) and that wire goes to main board ... pics attached ... if that wire is disconnected you will get noise ( humming)

Hello, due to moving and blistering hot weather I started working on the boombox just recently.
I would like to ask for help with disassembly of the electronics.
