impossibly rare crown (?) with 2x12" (! 10"?) woofers ca. 1992?

i'm curious if anyone has heard of this elusive boombox? around 1992 after my lasonic TRC-935 was stolen, i went shopping for a replacement and stumbled accross some ridiculous, and tacky looking to me, boomboxes including the "lady gaga/madonna"

the one i ALMOST wanted to get, i'm pretty sure, was a crown. as memory serves me, it was black and had cheesy looking fake gold trim and possibly less extreme lighting than the one above. i've tried keyword searching for it many times and think it might be one of the rarest, and possible THE true biggest boombox in the world.

i clearly remember the salesman claiming 12" woofers, but think they might actually have been 10", but i KNOW they were bigger than my lasonic's 8"ers. with such big woofers, the box might have had the deepest and loudest bass ever. i never actually listened to it because i couldn't get over how cheap and tacky it looked. my idea of a sexy box is the understated JVC RC-M90

someone here must have at least heard rumors of the "godzilla box" as i'm calling it. the thing was HUGE.

ring any bells with anyone? the only result i've found for "biggest boombox ever" was someone claiming the title for his matsuki ms-959 aka helix wheely 5000. i can't believe THAT's the biggest as it's about as wide as my lasonic TRC-935 was but just a little taller while that unobtanium one i remember would crush it

i KNOW i saw this box. i think it was a crown, i know it was really tacky, but i can't prove it ever existed.

No box I'm aware of had 12" woofers.

And Crown made nothing that was really big.

i figured this would be an impossible question to answer seeing search engine results yielded nothing, otherwise, there'd at least be rumors of a box with 10" or 12" woofers. i'm guessing the "true" holy grail is lost to time.

the shop had quite a collection.

the reason i think it was a crown was because of the tacky gold trim and something about it made me think royalty is an extra tacky reference to add to that. oh, i wish i had a time machine and a camera. eyes would pop out of their sockets to see the behemoth!

The Wheely is larger than the 935 by at least 6" and has 2 - 10's. There are a couple 3 pc boxes that are almost 4' long as well

then maybe what i saw was a variation on the wheely. from pics, it looks like it only has 8" speakers.

i think you might have solved the riddle. looking at it now, i could see not liking it because the design is just so visually busy. i hate the color red too, so those giant LED meters with chrome backing to boot would have turned me off when i like simple and monochrome.

there were about 10 different boxes at the store and ALL of them were on the flamboyant side design wise.

did the wheely sell for around $300 and in the early 90s? if so, that's probably the giant one i'm thinking of and the black and gold box was another one. i would bet THAT one was the crown, and probably the lasonic clone

i ALMOST bought a wheely i think.

"de-chroming" and getting rid of all the busy graphics on my lasonic TRC-935 was one of the reasons i painted it, but it was the best sounding box out of about a dozen at another store. some day i hope to share a pic i took of it on the beach the day it was stolen

speaking of folding boxes, the panasonix RX-A2 is one of my favorites ecept for the metal highlights. i like the black on charcoal color scheme and the mostly minimal design

the controls on that, and the JVC remind me of WWII aircraft and make the boxes "look" durable

i THINK that this is probably the crown boombox that i was merging with the wheely in my memory

the regular model number is SZ-5100 SL which probably stands for silver.

These are same size as the TRC931 and has 8"woofers and sound is awful compared to the Lasonics so most likely it's the one your referring to.

no, i think i was referring to the wheely originally. the box i almost bought had larger than 8" woofers, and the wheely is the only one i know that has 10" or larger. the salesman said they were 12s. the crown was just ANOTHER box that was there i didn't like because of the gold trim. as a single deck unit, i'm sure my TRC-935 was at least wider than the crown if not as tall. ALL of the large boxes on display at the shop were just too flashy and busy looking for my tastes.

the helix wheely 5000 aka matsuki ms-959 is the most likely candidate for "boxzilla", and looking at it, i could see not liking it back in the day for all its chrome and giant LEDs

i also would REALLY have not liked the fake RTA meter

as it has 10" woofers, then this guy with a matsuki ISN'T mistaken as i thought

with 10" woofers, one would think the wheely is a candidate for deepest bass ever, though it doesn't sound too bass heavy in the video with bass boost applied on the EQ to boot

so as NOT to offend any collectors, regarding the RTA, this owner calls his "fakey painted"
