... or at least a memory that might one day trigger a boombox desire.

I came in to my part-time job today and one of the owners had her four-year-old son with her. He and I are pretty good buds and when he saw me walk in with my Hitachi TRK-8800 I saw his eyes get really big. "Mr. Bobby, what's that?" I told him it's a boombox with a radio and cassette player and gave him a little demonstration. His attention was focused on the boombox intently as I worked the dial knob, volume, tape controls, etc. He was mesmerized. :-)

After I finish the short demo, which I thought would be enough for someone his age, he starts asking questions about each little thing on the Hitachi. :w00t: "What's this?" "What does this do?" Oh, man! I was thrilled to pieces! We must have spent 10 minutes going over EVERYTHING on the boombox and when I told him his dad could hook up his iPod to it, aw man, he thought that was the coolest thing in the world.

It was really cool to see admiration and enthusiasm for a boombox through a child's eyes. As he and his mom were leaving, I asked him if he wanted a boombox. He emphatically answered, "Yeah!" I told him I had plenty to choose from and that I would pick one out for him.

The Brotherhood lives on. :-D

Awesome story
The only reaction I got from kids to my boombox so far is "Why can't you listen to your music privately?"

Although once some teenagers in the train encouraged me to turn up a small boombox I had with me. And one guy in the middle of the night once said" Crank up 98.8 FM" That was fun

Go, Bobby, catch the next generation

Touched my heart there Bobby.
The current trends are to keep everything to yourself and have minimum live contact with people, the world needs to move back towards sharing and more contact with people outside of the isolated social networks.

That's how you pass the torch and keep the fire burning. Of course I can still remember what I put my poor mother through with unstoppable volume coming from my bedroom.

Maybe this little 4 year old will help the next generation grow out of this!

Maybe he'll be the John Connor in the war of boomboxes versus iPods. :-) :chris920:

I so agree. when did this society become a bunch of shut ins???
Great Story Bobby!!!!
We need to reach out to the youth and show them that there was a better time in life.
When kids actually hung out outside in the park and sharing the latest tunes. (in person)
The boombox still has the same effect on the youth they did 30
years ago.

love how kids take to all the controls on our boxes -
and watching the lights and the cassettes spinning around --
to some kids --its overwhelming-
and to some -- they cant get enough --

bobby --it will be fun for you to pick out that kids box -- :w00t:
although it may seem like a free gift :angelic:

make sure to beat him $$$ bad --
on a trade up --down the road :pimp: :dog: :pimp:

Agree - very cute story. We definitely need to pass it along to the next generation. As the rapper Nas said on "I Can" from a few years back, "...save the music, y'all..."

The pessimist in me says that perhaps it's wishful thinking to believe this is the beginning of a future boombox collector. Cuz try as I might, I can't recall the slightest thing from back when I was 4. :hmmm:

But it certainly is a cute story. Report back in a few years with an update to this story, if you can Bobby.

I remember a few things from 3-4 years old :-D One thing that really sticks out is some kids had a ramp set up down the block and so dummy me with a tiny 12" bike with training wheels decided to try and jump it  That was a mistake :-/
