So I saw this box pop up on eBay on a cheap (£50) BIN deal...I loved the look of it and wanted something different, something a bit rare in the UK. Well luckily the wife had had a couple of glasses of wine (it was Saturday night) so I managed to persuade her to temporarily lift my buying ban lol!

Well its come all the way from Germany to the UK and it only took 7 days. Seller was great...packed with a new strong carton, polystyrene and tons of bubble wrap...and even plastic wrapped the boombox itself.

Well I've had a bit of a play with it and gambling on a box I could find almost nothing on the web seems to have paid off!!!...it only flamin rocks!!!! Everything works perfectly, condition is very good, and has now had a detailed clean.

At low volume its nothing special but turn it up and it sounds fantastic on its proper RCA line in...LEDs bounce like crazy and aren't volume affected so they bounce whatever the volume.

Has good bass and lots of high end but its the stereo wide that's most impressive...on most boxes I don't use the wide setting as normal stereo sounds better to my ears but on this the wide is WIDE! And its loud...you can see the chrome caps bounce.

Need to compare it side by side with some others but its one of the best fifty quids I've spent....LOVE IT!

Behold the loveliness of my Goldstar TSR 640...its the same height and depth as my M70 but a little shorter so its no tiddler...anyone else have one? :-D

Very nice. That is a bit of a looker so it's good to know that it sounds good too. Ya jammy wee bugger! :-D
Do you use it with a lamp limiter or variac? 220V European boxes tend not to like the UK's typical 253V supply, I've a lovely old Telefunken that lasted all of a week on its 220V winding when I switched to that after the 250V one had failed one night during a fairly typical surge that saw the mains spiking to a shade under 262V.
So now, if I get anything without a winding that's designed to take an average of at least 250, out comes the lamp limiter which has the added bonus of giving me an extra source of light to read by. Also, the lamp will fail long before the tx in the box does. ;-)

I would check your local mains first, if it's relatively stable then just keep an eye on things but if it varies between 240 and 260 as it does along the coast by here, then either run it with an inline surge protector on the socket or use a lamp limiter which is connected between the live from the plug and the live to the set.

Here's what I use, just work out the value you need from the highest value at the mains and the number of watts you need to consume with that lamp to reduce the PD to an average of the correct 220V that some European countries use:

Assuming that you have 250 Volts across your ring, then try an 80 Watt lamp in series with the live side of the supply.

Ok surge protector it is then as I already have one plus it looks slightly less weird than the bulb affair...can't see the mrs liking the light thing in the kitchen lol :)

Thanks for the tip mate, I appreciate it :)

Hey no worries man, I'd hate to think of something that sexy breaking down for the want of a little preventative measure of whatever sort.

The UK in general has a hopelessly inconsistent supply voltage these days and I'm sure that someone, somewhere will be able to find a statistic which shows that its residents buy more surge protectors, variacs and similar things than any other country on the planet.

The only boxes I have that tend not to be connected through a "safe" socket (one in each room with inbuilt regulator circuit) or via a gadget are the B&O, whose TX died a week after I bought it so was replaced with a capacitative dropper and the boxes with DC input sockets which can be used with much more accommodating switch mode power supplies, though they're noisy devices if no worse than these darned CFLs that I have in the ceiling lamps.

Well if you spot another then bag it, turn it up, put it on wide and then nod in satisfaction with your awesome purchase :afro: :-D

I do not. I'm guessing color and voltage? Look pretty much the same.

I thought this was NIB. I was drunk when I read this. Ha. Glad yours sounds great. My 641 is minty fresh but I paid waaay too much for it. I was a naive newbie with money to burn. No regrets though. Great boomer.
