Speaking as an Australian: OMG that's a long way from anywhere Chris.

It's slightly North East of where the Brits tested nuclear weapons in the 50's in the Australia outback, also coincidently near Roxby Downs, a Uranium mine.

Steam trains are the coolest of them all. My Father-in-law was an Engineer and drove for Norfolk Southern R/R for 19 yrs.

Wild man....Your island is SOOOOO frigen big! I just thought that video was crazy, the machine is pulling up it's own roadway.... weird and sad at the same time. It's like watching a robot commit suicide! :dunce:

Yeah, steam locomotives are amazing. A great book to read is "Scalded to death by the steam". It's a bunch of real stories from the turn of the century of horrific steam train accidents. Those engineer's had ball of titanium.

Totally dig model railroads as well. Some people go NUTZ. One day I would like to build a model system. I have a few different gauges. I still have the set my grandmother gave me for christmas when I was about 6-7. Always goes under the tree!

I spend hours watching youtube at night (when not on Boomboxery of course) looking at video's of peoples set up's.

If you like trains you should try our national railway museum in York, it houses loads of amazing trains from all over the world. Free to get in too, though obviously its bit far  Been there loads of times when the kids were younger as its not far from me.

That would be something to see! I have been to quite a few train museums around the US. I think it would be cool to see the trains in York

When we Brits made the worlds railways we made some bonkers hardware

A company called English Electric decided to construct a locomotive powered by TWO 1750bhp 2 stroke engines with triangular 18 cylinder formations called DELTIC (which were originaly designed for minesweeper boats!)

They ran from the 50's until the early 1980's and sounded like nothing else

When they did their final runs in the UK they attracted crowds like Beatlemania across the land in 1982

I love this statement...."Their wonderful, their uncomfortable and terribly noisy".

Amazing machines!

The crazy thing is that the engine isn't a four stroke - and isn't a conventional "Vee" design

so it revved realy high to achieve maximum power:

"The Napier designed and built Deltic engine, originally developed for post war motor torpedo boats, is unique in terms of cylinder configuration as it has its cylinders arranged in triangular banks of 3. These banks have a crankshaft in each of the triangle corner points, which in turn connect to pairs of opposed pistons. Each bank has 3 cylinders, 6 pistons and 3 crankshafts."

as a motorhead - I found these things fascinating

http://royalscotsgrey.com/deltics.htm

check out the gif here how the thing works - they still run these on special passenger services in the UK now and again - as they saved six from the scrap heap

WHAAA THE FUUUUU?????

OK, I have NEVER seen that before!

Last week I spent a few hours reading and wrapping my head around the "W6", W8" and W16" engine configurations and this is really out there....I will have to get some more info on those for sure....

Absolutely mind bending!

The gear head in me just eats this stuff up! :-D

Thanks for sharing.

This is something I have always wanted to do, volunteer at a local vintage train yard and work on steam trains! GREAT video's....I love it. Not to far from where I live is the town of FILMORE and they have a nice collection of trains and run them regularly. They recently got a steam train running at great expense. In the summer they have "Dinner Trains" and for a reasonable price you get a ride on the train, have dinner and a murder mystery show by actors. They use a push pull set up with a diesel electric and the steam engine, one at each end.

BIG TRAIN NEWS!

At the end of last year Union Pacific Railroad announced they were looking to refurbish the biggest locomotive ever built. The 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. In the last few months, negotiations have been going on to acquire #4014, one of only 8 remaining Big Boy's of the original 25 built. #4014 is currently in Pomona California on display at the Fairplex Rail Museum. Thanks to information from our very own mellymelsr (who is a train engineer) it sounds like this is going to happen! Below is the first story regarding this.

More Info:
Big Boy was the name of the Union Pacific Railroad's 4000-class 4-8-8-4 articulated steam locomotives, built between 1941 and 1944 by American Locomotive Company (Alco). The 25 Big Boys were the only locomotives to have the 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, with two sets of eight driving wheels, a four-wheel leading truck for stability entering curves and a four-wheel trailing truck to support the large firebox.
