I've been building the collection, but need a good turntable. Anyone with suggestions on a good affordable model would be appreciated. I haven't purchased any new releases, at least not since tapes came out, but am ABSOLUTELY THRILLED vinyl is coming back in a big way.

THANKS!

I do listen to some of my old vinyls regularly.

especially when i come home from work very late i just slip out of the shoes, loose the necktie and get high on some soul and/or blues, mostly motown.

I found a friend for life in my Thorens TD 295 MK IV

exactly like this one:

TD295.6.jpg

didn't buy any new vinyl for about a year - kinda lost the connection to the new releases. especially when there is nothing new in your favourite genre.

I play my records at least once a month. If I had more time I'd absolutely listen more. There is a warmth that vinyl (and analog itself) brings that makes it easy to listen for hours on end.

Holly,

There was a shop in Seattle and one in Tacoma that may still be in business that restored old audio gear. Just do a search. Of course what I'm referring to was nearly fifteen years ago when I was stationed at Ft. Lewis but you never know. I'd go for a Technics SL-QD33 (Direct Drive) turntable. Priced very reasonably (hint: cheap) and peforms very well to get you started. :-D

As you noted great resale value... = expensive for a fully working one in good condition. The SL-QDxx or even the BDxx series are great starter tables. Most vinatge turntables worth a damn will be expensive as parts are rare and the skill to properly recondition them is even rarer. :-)

For anyone new or looking to get back into vinyl I'd recommend these units before committing big bucks to a high end or classic rebuild. They are generally are found in good shape, have the TP (P-Mount) cartridge which is pretty much idiot proof and cheap to get. (If you are getting back into vinyl ALWAYS get a new cartridge! Never trust that the one included is in "good" condition.) They are simple to operate and have agood S/N ratio and pretty low rumble factor if set on a good solid surface.

I listen to vinyl quite a bit. I've gone through about 10 turntables so far, testing sound quality. fisher and jvc are pretty good so far. technics would be the better quality to get if you can afford it, the 1200 being about a grand. I choose to not pay that, so I have been thrify store hunting them for around 10-15$. The jvc automatic 1980s model with a stanton setup has been the best so far, that cost me around 10$.

I've been buying a few new records, 180 gram original master recordings sound great :breakdance: , but not cheap. megadeth being the latest.

Im tired sorry for the rambling |-)

I guess "expensive" is subjective - I sold a pair of boxed 1200's with Shure M44-7's - my own personal owned from new set - for only 300 pounds not long ago.

I think you can pick them up in excellent working order for less than 180 new - that is small beans for a hifi component which is capable of reproducing great fidelity through a decent amp to anyone who is willing to chuck away 30-50 quid on a "maybe" working cassette based portable.

300 quid? Bargain for the pair! If I hadn't been 10000 miles away I'd've 'ad em!
Love the photo btw. Nice clean shot of the cart on vinyl!! Top drawer!
