Hi,

Does anyone know (or could test) if the fast forward and rewind on the tape deck of a Hitachi TRK-8300E includes the auto-stop function at the end of cassettes, or if you have to manually press stop to cancel fast forward/rewind when the end of the tape is reached?

Thanks!

I don't have one but doing a quick search, it has cue/review & auto stop function printed on the front so it should auto stop using ff (end of tape), rew (beginning of tape) and play (end of tape).

Thanks for your respective replies and advice.

The auto-stop function works only with playback, according to the operator manual, which is as I suspected. It does not mention that fast forward or rewind auto-stop when reaching the tape end, which is how the one I have here works. As with many portable radio cassette stereos, you have to press the tape stop button to disengage the fast forward and rewind. Bit of shame as one would think that having cue and review would automatically mean that a slightly lesser function like FFW/RW auto-stop would be included, but no so with the TRK-8300E it appears.

Nice find, Royce. It shows the auto-stop mechanism. Boxes typically use a tension-based auto-stop mechanism on manual decks, and that's what I see on this model (soft-touch deck generally use optical/magnetic sensors to detect lack of spindle movement).

I don't see why auto-stop shouldn't also work on FF/rew, since those should create enough tension once it gets to the end of the tape.

So, when we see a lever like that next to the playback head that is a good indication it is not "Full AutoStop"!
Lame auto stop mechanism!
