Hitachi TRK-8190 no sound on tape?

Hi, I'm new here so hello! Just put a belt set on a Hitachi TRK-8190, tape now appears to work in play, rewind and fast forward but there is no sound, sound still comes from the radio and the line in but nothing from the tape, anyone got any ideas? I am not an electrician just a keen enthusiast, so when this happens I'm stuck. It could even be me who caused this problem.

First thing to do is try cleaning the radio/tape/line in function switch with Deoxit F5. Spray Deoxit F5 inside the function switch internal contacts and move it for a minimum of 25 times.

I'd do all switches and pots then the record bar switch.
You have to get into the box to do it correctly/thoroughly.

Yes I have taken the chassis out of the cabinet, cleaned all pots and switches but still nothing, thanks anyway, any other ideas? anyone?

What kind of "silence" are you hearing when pressing play? Do you hear any difference? Any clicks or change in the hiss? If you hear zero change, then I'd check to make sure the cables running from the tape head to the main board are connected properly.
