Help with cleaning up my M70

Hey guys, first time attempting to clean up/semi restore a boomer, picked my M70 that i just got as it has been sitting around for god knows how long, everything works luckily but the speakers get staticy every now and then when adjusting the volume, only a little bit, and all the switches/sliders/casing etc is just caked with dust/dirt build up and i'd like to get it all refreshed.
I've managed to pull the back off, pull all the sliders/knobs off, top cover and the entire chassis assembly without too much trouble, got abit lost with the chassis discovering hidden screws but came off without too much trouble. only thing i haven't taken off are the cassette deck buttons (play/stop/rr) etc, how do they come off?
whats the best way to clean this thing out, should i just use compresed air on the chassis/front and rear casing to blow out all the cobwebs, dead bugs and dirt etc? should i completely strip the front case of speakers/wiring etc and bath it? as well as the rear case? i've seen people using the term bath but what does that entail, just soapy water or is there something special i need to clean them with?
also what is the best way to clean and lubricate the slider/switch mechanisms?

Soap water is the best bet for washing the body perfectly. Of course for that you must disassemble it complete. If the main boards need cleaning ( i doubt it so bad anyway) you can clean em with clean alcohol , or if just dusty - you know - good blow off will work perfectly. Washing em with the contact cleaner will work too. Take a contact cleaner which leave no greasy spots and evaporate complete. A lot of contact cleaner should work for the sliders and knows - filling em than moving em lot of times and again and again....... After that is good idea to use carefully some greasy contact cleaner to leave some protective film in the sliders. Im not sure about the names of those cleaners in AU and you should ask the seller for that ( usually is written on cans too, but there are generally two tipes - one complete evaporating leaving no spots , which is really important when you clean around the radio window for example , and second is wich is lubricating and leaving greasy protective film). Use towels and hair dryer ( really careful from distance to not got heated) on the body to dry it out after the bat. Can use some polish to give a shine , but im not fan of that tough. Knobs and slider caps soak in soap water for a while and then rinse em and dry em with towel ( be careful to not loose some in the sink- put some towel or so where the water is draining , so no knob or so cap can be flushed) .
Its a lot of work, but when finish you will be satisfied. Its another level.

How on earth do you pull the clear tuner plastic off? I feel like im gonna break something here . Ive got the top off the 2 little lugs but cant see how the bottom comes out is it glued on or is it clipped on somehow?

I always thought it was glued on .. But I've never taken one off before

Managed to get it all figured out, cleaned everything inside and out all the speakers etc resprayed the woofer grills it has cone up mint as just from a clean. Just need to get some dexoit tommorow so i can do all the slider contacts etc and i can put it together andhope it all works :/ lol.

deoxit can do wonderful things to a boombox

Yep, coupla lugs on the top and glued along the bottom...mine fell off so that's how I know Glued back on now tho

Get servisol contact cleaner (jaycar/radio parts) much larger can than deoxit.

Deoxit is a rip off in OZ + the one from Jaycar isn't the best type for sliders.

Thanks for the help guys! i ended up getting servisol from jaycar and it has worked a treat, fixed up abit of static i was getting through the speakers when adjusting volume, got it all back together and made a new thread for it with finished pics

For horizontal sliders is "must" to put some greasy protective layer after clean em with normal contact cleaner Will save you a lot of troubles later. Top sliders getting filled with dirt pretty fast.... Not sure about the best one over there, but deffo worth to check

Just got myself my first M70 - yay!

It has the dreaded dead slider problem on the right channel and I'm hoping it is just dirt and grime.
It currently sounds really quiet unless the slider is slid to the top of the range and then it blasts out i.e. problem just seems to be on lower volume positions of slider.

I have some Servisol that I find works great on rotational pots but was not so good on a 9191 slider I tried it on.
I also read above ^^^^ that sliders benefit from protective grease as well (I think this was problem on my 9191 slider i.e. the Servisol dried it out too much).

So my question, with a bias to what I can source easily in the UK, is what cleaning product is the best that I should initially use on the slider (as I'm now a bit wary of Servisol) and then what additional product should I use afterwards to add the protective grease to the slider - what have other's found works well for M70 sliders specifically?

Well, it isn't usually that simple with the M70 sliders. I usually don't spray contact cleaner in the sliders anymore on M70s. I noticed that it made them feel scratchy and stiff and I was actually using a generic contact cleaner spray when I first started out with boomboxes. Now I use Deoxit brands D5 and F5 spray. F5 has lubricant. Now I just spray some on a q-tip and wipe the slider resistor board with the q-tip. You might have to repair the slider contacts on the board, worst case.

Thanks Si - I plan to dismantle the slider and give it a thorough clean and check - probably next weekend by the time I get all I need to do it (including a bit of time)
