HI all,
I just came home with a boom box today. I've been looking for a vintage unit of decent size for quite sometime and was excited when I finally found one. Alas, she doesn't play on power or batter.

I've opened her up and looks like she's putting out about 7.8 volts from the power section but that doesn't seem rigt since it has a 13.5 volt input for external DC.

Does that sound right? Anyone know where I can get a service manual?

Thanks
Steve

For batteries to work you may need to clean the micro switch built into plug section of box (where you put plug in) You may need to take back off to see it. You may also need to lightly sand contacts of switch. It's well known to get corroded. Also check the battery terminals for corrosion. As for power board there may be a bad cap or diode :hmmm:

+1. I've had various bomboxes with 'clean looking' battery terminals that wouldn't go on DC. A light sand and all is well.

Were you able to test it before buying or was it shipped to you?

Good luck,

James... :-)

Ok so I went and dug out my bench power supply and completely bypass the supply that is built into this deck at attached 13.5 volts directly to the unit. It now powers powers up like that and will play distorted thru the aux input but sill no tape or tuner action.

Not sure this one is worth the effort its going to take to get going.

Distortion could be from power supply you used. Or if its phono in and not line in you will have distortion from device...Cleaning function switch could help return radio and deck function. But honestly deck most likely needs full cleaning, lube, belts and to be demagnetized.

What did you use to power it? If you used a lower milliamp than is rated it will play distorted and some functions wont work, Try an adapter minimum 12 volts proper polarity plug into the external input. You can also use another transformer just check the output rating first.

Post your findings and good luck!
