help an ebay noob

So as I said in my recent first post when I last was into buying boxes there was no internet much less ebay....

My buddy had this box and I always envied it, esp. the look.

But her description seems odd to me...she can't find a tape to test it?? Is she just trying to hide that it doesn't work? And the bad pics and lack of detailed description compared to others selling boxes. Just wondering people's thoughts

Sometimes, it's true. But most of the time, "I don't have tape to test it" is code for it's broke but I don't want to say so. Then it's got a crack. And for that, she's asking top dollar.

My suggestions to you.... stay away from that one. Be patient, the right one will come along. No reason for you to start out your boombox collecting hobby on the wrong foot. If you really like that model, ask around here and somebody here might sell you one, and if the tape doesn't work, the guys here will surely know and will surely tell you.

The best advice I can give in regards to ebay with boomboxes is this: there are three types of sellers.

1, Sellers that do their market research and price their boxes accodingly and are transparent about it's faults.
2, Sellers just selling something they've found and are happy with any dollars they can get for it and are happy to admit they don't know much, but will try to help the potential buyer when asked questions.
And 3, Sellers that think they have something worth a lot of money but couldn't be bothered to do any research and also can't be bothered to photograph it correctly or answer questions, or write a decent listing.

Once you decide which one of the three you're dealing with you bid accordingly to avoid as much disappointment as possible when you actually receive it.

It's a buyer-beware, live-and-learn situation, but like most things in life patience is the best thing you can excercise.

on ebay ..always look at the list of ' sellers other items '
you can tell that the 'have no tape to test' bit -- may be believable,
as there are few electronic goods -- so thats ok - sort of.

you can also tell- that this seller just grabs random stuff at yard sales, auctions etc
and whips out some qwik//high $$ BIN prices - to turn a fast// huge profit -
that ok , too :-)

whats not ok --is that huge price -
for that sellers weak/hapless effort --poor photos & no testing ( line-in ???)
400 is ridiculous :dunce: :thumbsdown: --thats the top dollar price for a near perfect one

you could take the risk - HOPE it works and looks good :hmmm: :angelic:
but pay no more than $100 = TOPS

I agree.......Not a collector by any means......Just another unemployed yard-sale rummager who does the bare minimum of research, and thinks he can get M70-league money for a basic egg :lol:

But collectors aren't any more honest, IMO.........I've come to the conclusion that when most collectors put a box up for sale, it's because there's something about it they don't like, and they aren't willing to reveal what that is. I never trust collectors who claim "I need Christmas money" or "I lost my job"

Ever notice how a rare model will be totally absent from Ebay for a whole year, and then all of a sudden you see 3 of them within just a few weeks? I used to think "Oh, it's because the first one attracted other guys to put theirs up for sale".........But lately I've come to believe that it's the SAME box. The first seller was dishonest and sold a dud to the second guy, who re-lists it because he's disappointed with it, and HIS description isn't honest because he thinks he's justified in passing his loss on to someone else......Then the 3rd guy receives it and is disappointed with it, and the cycle continues......

In any case, that JVC can easily be found for $200 or less..........$399 is laughable, especially with its unknown condition.......

thanks for all the good advice. Think I got a little over anxious since I wanted the thing 15 years ago!

I agree with what everyone said....BE patient and you will find that radio for a good price in better condition. Those are especially rare so the chances of finding a good one are in your favor....

When you do find one.....POST PICTURES. :-D

People lie through different methods. Sometime a fuzzy photo or a claimed lack of knowledge .

That's a really great observation and perfectly fits my experience of non-stop eBay searching this last week.

the ac cord ( included ) is very straight
